OK, I think I have gained a switcher (careful he is watching this thread at home and following along).
He is a pilot and is interested in his first Mac, a MacBook.
Will probably go to the Apple Store in Raleigh on Sat and get it, and applecare.
I have a 12" G4, so not a big help on this one.

Give the lowdown plz.

1. Any issues with 1.83 chip that are unresolved
2. Battery issues (heat?)
3. Issues I don't know to ask.

This weekend NC has a tax free school weekend. Meaning lots of things from shoes and clothes to laptops, have no sales tax (7%!!!). A fine time to buy. I just don't want my family member to walk into the wrong apple experience.

Thanks for any and all advice.
(there james....sign up as a newbie and follow along!:) )

PS. We are thinking of a stock config, 512 of mem, etc.....

i'd go ahead and buy it. if you end up having any problems, call applecare. keep in mind that these boards make it seem like EVERY macbook owner is unsatisfied with their buy.. but that's not the case!

i agree. and Apple has had time to workout some of the "issues" already

The Macbook Pro 1.83's are going for $1659, tax free on numerous sites, authorized and nonauthorized. Could purchasing the MBP from a nonauthorized dealer void the warranty? For instance...B&H Photo/Video:confused: Sorry, didn't mean to thread hijack.

He is the proud owner of a new MacBook, will open it depending on the announcements on Monday!
Thanks.

James - You have been assimilated. :p

Wow. That wud be hard for me to do. Having the MB right in front of me and still not able to open the box and get the beauty out.

Anyways thats the best thing to do as Stevenote is only 50 hours and 20 minutes away.

But I seriously doubt there will be any update for MacBooks on monday.

what were the issues?

I have purchased the Macbook Pro 1.83. The only issue I have so far is the whine when I plug the mag safe power brick in. It is a little annoying, but not too bad. I will send it in when I am done playing with it.

I only have the factory 512 Megs of Ram and the laptop seems to run real smooth. I will elaborate more when I have had it more than a day. Maybe some other problems may show up, and I sure hope not.

The bright screen is beautiful!
