Hey Folks,
I am having another problem with my Powerbook.. For some reason when I open up Aol Instant Messenger (AIM), it gets to the part that says signing on, and then freezes up.. I have no idea why.. I was told by someone before on this board, to Delete every file and the program having to do w/ it, and then re-download/install .. I did that with Windows Media Player and it worked.. I want to do it to my AIM program, but will I lose my buddy list ? or will it be ok ?? Any other advice would be appreciated..
Thanks again,
-Matt

I had to re-download mine and my buddy list was still intact. Sometimes running repair permissions or or a restart also helps. Good luck.

My house!
Your buddy list is attached to the AOL server, not your local computer. Thats why you can sign on with ANY computer, Mac or PC, and your buddy list will be there when you sign in.

I would just use iChat. AOL blows! :D

Adium X is a very popular multi client instant messenger application.

There are lots of threads discussing it in here...
I'm a big fan as are many other members in here.

Ok, i just tried to delete all of the AOL instant messenger files and the program itself.. Well it seems that I have found the problem or virus.. The trash bin will not delete a file b/c it is "in use" so I re-started and shut down completely, and tried again, and again the computer freezes and will not delete.. How can I MAKE the trash empty ??

Have a look in the Activity Monitor (Under Applications/Utilities) and Force Quite any related processes as needed.
You should be able to delete it then.

Ok, I did what you said, and there are about 20 files that the User is : ROOT.. When I delete them, it force quits them, and then they come right back up.. I dont even know what to do right now.. and when I try to empty the recycle bin, it freezes.. then says that the trash cannot empty because Launchd (1) is in use.. Some of those root files are using 39.80MB of ram and other programs using 1,008KB.. I am so aggrivated.. I think tomorrow i'm going to go get a new Anti-Virus.. I have norton, and it keeps asking me for a subscription.. which I have had for a little under a year..
MAYDAY MAYDAY .. lol .. this ship is goin down

You DO NOT have a virus and don't need to waste your money YET.

Just drag the AOL IM application to trash and go to

USER/LIbrary/Prefernces and trash the AIM preference
.plist.

Once they are in the trash reboot then try emptying your trash
without activating ichat or AIM again and it should clear the bin.

While logged in as an admin:

Copy whatever folder's left in the trash to your home directory, then launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and type "sudo rm -ri " without the quotes (but with the space). Then drag the folder onto the terminal window. Hit Return.

It will prompt you for your password. No characters will be displayed as you type it, but you are entering it....

Press Return again.

You'll need to confirm the removal of each file ("y") because the "i" option specifies that. It's just a safety precaution so that you don't screw things up if you mess up the rest of the command.

That should do the job, but BE CAREFUL because "rm" can be dangerous if used improperly.

Hi,
I did what you said about using the terminal but more or less had to guess. When you say home file, your talking about the House in the Finder right? also, how do I cofirm those files you were talking about ? I didn't understand that.. Thanks,
-Matt

Hey, I got your PMs and here are some pictures. . I checked all the files again to make sure they weren't locked..I checked before and they weren't.. The File in the trash that is now labled Trash2, was labeled AOL Instant messenger.. I changed it, and then the inside file is named Bart , and then the last file in the folder is (1).. Which is what is stopping me from deleted it.. Thanks,
-Matt

I'm not sure at all how your got a Trash 2 folder.

If you emptry trash straight out of a restart with no connection and with out the AIM application trying to make a connection, nothing should be running.

If you are still getting the error that the folder contents are in use, then look for the "enclosing folder" to see where it's coming from.

Something tells me that AIM was set to connect at startup so you just need to kill that setting.

It might even be in your classic Applicatons folder
if you installed it.

You should be able to see the contents of any folder.

There must be another file of some sort inside the Trash 2 file shown.

You might need to open it with text edit to see what's really there.
