Hi,

I'm new in the forum, please excuse me if I have an extensive lack of knowledge. I need help deciding which machine to buy.

Currently I'm using my MBP 15 I bought back in 2007, a very poor 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI X1600 256MB, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and upgraded hdd to 320Gb and a bunch of external hdd's. Runs ok with 10.7.5.

I'm a pro photographer and I run LR4 with lots 24mb raw files, laptop is a little slow here but I can live with that.

The problem comes now that I started a video company and editing with premiere CS6 make the fans run very fast and CPU rises to 80ºc. I feel that it can fail anytime soon. Trying to avoid overheating I use a laptop stand with fans but not sure if helps.

The main question is that I need to get a new machine and I´m not sure which one fits on my needs or simply if I should go buy now or wait for the new mac pro?

My idea is to get a 2.40GHz 12-core, with only two upgrades, 512 ssd for system & apps and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB. The rest I can upgrade it later with non apple parts as work requires (even GPU can be upgraded later but difference is only $200).

The machine I need has to be able to run Photoshop CS6, Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6, Auditions CS6 and maybe Lightroom 4 too, at the same time.

I know the cost is gonna be high so thats why I ask for your advise here, I don't wanna screw it and spend 5K on the wrong stuff.

Thanks in advance!

German Paz.

It's unfortunate that the mac pro lacks standard CUDA options considering the use of Premiere. Also consider that no matter what, these machines are really aging hardware. $5k is quite a lot for what you really get in terms of hardware. As for the notebooks, even the new ones get really hot under that kind of load, although I think a few people on here mentioned using the rMBP in After Effects.

I should add that I only gave advice based on if you are absolutely firm on building a Mac. If *I* were building a new edit system TODAY, I would build a PC system for the Adobe products, using Windows 7.

ADK Media Group are a well-respected builder of edit systems, and they should be someone you talk to first. They know Macs and PCs, so it's not like I'm sending you to a PC-only shop. They build both.

I totally agree with this. I use Premiere Pro C6 and FCS, hence the only reason why use a MacPro.
