It seems like just about all the reviewers and most users and potential customers really like the speaker placement on the HTC One. I hope other manufacturers copy it and can use it without fear of lawsuits.

A guy was just asking me about my One today and the speakers on the front. I think they are wonderful. Now if HTC could only make their battery like my iPhone, and last longer. One of the things I miss about my iPhone

Best speakers ever, hands down.

On a side note, I suggested front-facing speakers on this forum a while ago and was laughed out of town!

This is great to hear since I've got a used One coming next week. How are the speakers when used on a call (speakerphone)? I use that all the time when I'm in my work truck, so loud speakers are a must for me.

I never tested speakerphone with the One while I had it. But I did have it next to amy S4 and had them both play the same song with the volume at full. The One and S4 both sounded the same at full volume....except the One had much better clarity and fullness of sound. I think you will see more phones coming out with front facing speakers in the future....

Incredibly loud playing music, very loud on speakerphone.

That would surprise me - I haven't heard the S4 on full blast, but the HTC on max was so loud the neighbours could hear it. True story.

The HTC One is the best sounding small device on the market that I have ever personally experienced.

I have had some small compact disc players that actually got "class" rated by Stereophile magazine which does not happen very often. The HTC One just might though they never included a phone that I know of. BTW, the One blows away those prior compact disc players.

I have had some real nice small boom boxes that sound great but I am glad to own the One which is so much more portable.

I noticed the same thing when messing with someone's HTC One and comparing it to my S4. Loudness was equivalent even if I placed the S4 on it's back, but the S4 speakers sounds more monotone. I'm not sure if Beats was enabled or not on the HTC One.

What would be even better? ........... If manufacturers started to make speakers on both the front & back. :D

I doubt Beats would have been a factor, it's just an equaliser preset.

Insanity at its finest, I'd imagine. That'll be one really loud smartphone, is it even necessary?

yep, those front speakers are simply awesome.

some reviewers also said that although s4 can produce louder sound, htc one's sound is more clear and crisp. we need more phones with front facing speakers.

it's not about the speakers, it's the beats software which is doing it's magic. htc's phones sound way better than any other phone, why? cuz of the beats software.

What iPhone were you using? So the One has much worse battery life compared to said iPhone?

----------

I want to add a thought about all this. I think it's pretty stupid to put your speaker on the back of the phone. It's something I haven't given much thought about over the years because my first smartphone was an iPhone 3G in 2008 and I've been using an iPhone ever since. So speakers on the bottom have simply been a given. There are several instances in my life where speakers on the back would be a serious issue for me.

So it appears the One has the very best setup with respect to speakers. On the front and from all accounts the best quality speakers currently available on a smartphone.

Jumping from the iPhone 4 to the 5 last fall, I immediately noticed how much better the iPhone 5's speakers were from the 4. But from what I gather the One is just another level up. I hope HTC is rewarded for these efforts but strong One sales.

It is pretty amazing how obvious it is to place the speakers on the front now that there is a good phone with them on the front. Really makes the phones with them on the back and bottom look a little foolish. Honestly I've always thought the placement of the speaker(s) on the bottom of the phone a horrible design. Personally I'm always covering it up in landscape mode or resting it on a pillow or something. I wish more phones had front facing speakers or at the very least somewhere away from where hands would grip the phone.

I think front facing speakers on a phone are a total waste of space. Front facing speakers on a tablet, like on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I have no problem with. But on a phone it just makes the phone bigger by making the bezels look even bigger. From the front view I think the HTC One is not that pleasant to look at. Big bezels really bother me. I have yet to see anyone use the speaker on their phone over the head phones. I want maximum screen size and minimal footprint. And front facing speakers just won't give you that.

Yet the One still has smaller top and bottom bezels than the iPhone......

Well that's not saying much. iPhone has never been a phone with minimum bezels. Bezels like you see on the current high end Android phones from LG, Samsung and Sony are what look modern. Just look at any current display (monitors, TVs) and you'll see bezels shrinking. Big bezels on any display just look too dated.

But then...following the insanity....do we really need speakers on a phone?
Do we need the big screens? Do we need internet on a phone? Do we need to take pictures on a phone? I am just being sarcastic here....but do you see my point? Smartphones have been evolving for years now......

You do have a point. Despite my disdain at all things Samsung, I do love the bezel on the GS4. They definitely got maximum use of their real estate. I guess it comes down to which feature you use more, but personally, I would take more screen w/less bezel any day of the week.
