Need PowerPC 750 Help

So my parents arent rich at all and they have custody of my neice, they are really poor so a buddy of mine gave them an older imac so they could have a computer for xmas. Its a PowerPC 750 (this computer)

So I get it to their house and boot it up and it runs slower than any cpu I have ever seen. I did notice it was running Mac OS 9.1. I do NOT know much about imac or really how to do anything with it and some help would be very nice. I want to fix this so they have a working cpu(my neice is 12 and still doesnt know how to type) and so my mother can surf the net and what not.

Should I reinstall an OS or do you guys have any suggestions? If I should install whats a good OS to install and how do you install it? I am not pc dumb by any means and I am really good with any non apple. I actually build non apple cpus for the neighborhood kids all the time. I have a friend in a similar sitution and I got their iMac 233 up to 384 gigs of ram with a 80 gig hard drive.

You need to be brave and open it up and get more ram in there and a better hard drive. There are old guides for it on the internet. It's called the Bondi Blue iMac 233ghz G3

Get it up to 256 ram at least. My friends iMac bondi like yours flies on 384 ram.

Those things were solid workhorses.

As with any new-to-you computer, I would re-install the OS... but go with a time period correct installation... so 10.3 or something along those lines, that way it can operate as current as possible with out being completely bogged down. Get some more RAM for it though at the least. It should be fine for basic internet but don't expect smooth streaming video or anything too intensive.

yeah but as stated cash isnt there to be thrown into a new imac. even a new pc would probably be more. the price of ram now makes it a good idea


like said, replace the hard drive and the ram. you might even be able to find a cpu from one of the later ones to use

also i dont know if this model had seperate video memory, but if it does you should replace that too

For basic usage, upgrade the RAM to at least 128MB, and try OS 10.2. 10.3 is slightly sluggish.

If you're going to spend more then about US$50 you've already bought a faster iMac G3.
