Hi,

I've got a couple of old LaCie Rugged RAID external hard drive storage devices (LaCie Rugged RAID 4TB STFA4000400) - they use my Thunderbolt ports (I believe these are Thunderbolt 2 - on my 2015 15" MacBook Pro). They work great - and the drive is powered through the Thunderbolt cable. No adapters or external power supplies needed.

In contrast the newer LaCie Rugged RAID requires a $50 dongle to use my Thunderbolt connector OR you can use the supplied USB dongle - however, I was told by Apple yesterday that I'd ALSO have to connect the power supply to the external drive when using USB. Not sure if that is really true - but, I decided not to buy this drive from the Apple store based on what Apple told me about needing external power.

I'm really looking for replacements of what I already have - with these requirements:

  • plugs into my older Thunderbolt port ports
  • has RAID 1 (for redundancy)
  • powered through the Thunderbolt port (external PS not necessary)

So, for those of you that have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro - what external drives meet the above requirements (or close to that)?

-M
