Hey everyone,

So I had a bit of a disaster yesterday, my little nephew somehow managed to drive over my iPad with his bike. I left the iPad on the grass for what must have been a second, not sensible I know. It was in a case with a sleeve but as you can see from the attached pictures, the screen didn't survive the impact from the wheel.

We don't have an Apple Store nearby but we do have an official reseller store and they quoted me £ 247 (same as Apple's site) given it was outside of the 1 year AppleCare. I then went to a few local third party repair shops and two of them pretty much gave the same figure, said they could do the job for at least £100. I've always been a bit reluctant to go third party but I was curious, I've heard a few stories on here in the past about Touch ID no longer working following a screen repair and very cheap components being used.

I then began looking at replacement options. My general usage for the device is pretty standard, I use the iPad in the home office as a second screen, for video calls on Zoom and watching TV in the background. However, storage is key as I tend to take it with me while travelling for work, so download a lot of shows/movies for offline viewing. Looking at the most recent release, I can see that they no longer offer a 128GB option which I found was the perfect amount of storage for my needs. 64GB seems too small but 256GB is a bit too much for my usage (and I noticed the price bumps up a bit for this model to £459). Not really wanting to fork out a huge deal of cash given it was never my intention to buy an iPad anytime soon, I went to the Apple Refurb section and saw they had the exact same model I had been using for £279 - 7th gen, Silver and 128GB.

I gave in and bought it there and then but a few hours later and I'm having some doubts, was it a good/clever move? I can no longer cancel the order as it's already shipped and according to Apple it will be with me tomorrow morning (they have super quick shipping I'll give them that!). I know in comparison to Apple's repair bill, £247 for a fixed screen verses just £32 more for a new screen, battery & outershell - it probably was the better decision but I'm concerned about how much life is left in the 7th generation iPad? I was a 1st gen iPad owner and I think by 2013, the device became a doorstop given most apps had dropped support for it.

I guess I could just do with some advice if that's OK, should I just unbox and carry on with the refurb or send it back , play safe and buy a 64GB 9th gen instead? Storage space would be tight so I'd probably have to sacrifice some things along the way.

I’d keep the refurb. As you have stated, the 64gb will not meet your needs. However, if you are thinking of software/app support, you might want to go with the 256gb 9th gen which should last for at least 5 years or more. I would rather have more storage than too little.

Seems a solid decision. You were happy with it before it broke. You fixed it with a new version for very little extra. You can just replace it on your next upgrade cycle when you need or want a newer model.

Thank you guys

Your responses have really helped. I think I'll stick with the refurb and see how long I can get from it. As much as I'd love to go for the 256GB 9th gen, its just not something I can justify spending the extra £180 on at the moment (on top of the £279 already put down)

Put the old one on eBay as parts only - remember to include the fact it's 128GB in the title. It could be worth around £100 as it is. Even if it's only worth £50 it's still something.

I'd use the extra money to upgrade to a newer version than the 7th gen.
