Need some advice. Trade 3gs MC for MB??

So I have been trying to get rid of my 16gb 3gs because its a tethered jb. So i found some kid that is trying to sell his 16gb MB 3gs for like $575 and so I talked to him today and mentioned I was selling mine, so he said he would just trade me. But... there were a couple things im not sure of.

1)He said he got the phone 3 days ago from the Apple store. But its a MB model, and its not refurbished... its "brand new"

2) He did say its untethered because he "hacked" it, it he says when you boot it up it has like a console (is that verbose boot?)

His add does say it comes with Apple Care, which is nice.

So, if someone could just clear up those two questions for me.. that would be great.

Well if you reboot his and it doesn't restart automatically, it is tethered. If it is a rebuild, the 2nd digit of the serial nmber will be a letter instead of a number.

Seems odd to get a 3 day old 3GS phone with old bootrom. Unless it is refurbished.

The first question is why would he be willing to trade a brand new 16 GB untethered iPhone with Apple Care for a used 16 GB tethered iPhone? What's in it for him? I can't see anything, which makes it a very suspicious deal. Did he offer you any explanation as to why he wants your phone?

Second, the important thing is not what model number the phone has, but what version of iBoot it has. You need to check (or have him check, if you trust him) the version of iBoot on his phone. If it is 359.3 (not 359.3.2), then you're all set for an untethered jailbreak.

But you still have to wonder about his motivation. Think of it this way: if someone offered to trade his brand new 2010 Ford Mustang with upgraded sound for your 2009 Ford Mustang with 15k miles and a standard sound system, what would you think? Personally, I would think the car was stolen or defective...

If I were you, I'd have him turn off and turn the phone back on in front of you. If it's jailbroken, it would get stuck (if it's a tethered jb) and you'd know right then and there.

That is, of course, only if you were so inclined to check it out with him.

Besides that, thelatinist has the real idea (regarding the mustangs) I'd be suspicious

Exactly... That's what I can't figure out. Seems like a good deal to me.

He kinda sounds clueless, I tried explaining to him the difference between old and new bootrom, and he just said, "Oh I have tools to hack around that". So I think deep down he thinks he can get an untethered jb, but he really has no idea.

I love when they say hack, like they went through all the coding to hack their phone, when they really just downloaded a program off the internet .

If the iPhone's model is MCxxxxx then it is a 3Gs. If it is MBxxxxx it is a 3G. If MA original iPhone. He might be trying to sell you a 3G as a 3Gs. I also don't think the 3Gs has verbose boot.

So far all 3GS refurbs have come with old baseband, which is good. The phone is a refurb with that serial number. Maybe why he will trade, refurb helps you out, he gets new phone.

Just for the record, my 0K005 refurb is a tethered jailbreak... now I don't find it to be that much worse than my previous phone's untethered jailbreak, since they really almost never had to be rebooted, but that's just me.

Well Apple had to run out of old bootrom 3GS phones to refurb sooner or later. You are the first person who I have read got new bootrom on refurb 3GS.
