Need some help with MetaX & Identify

I am new to ripping movies to my hard drive. I have recently purchased AppleTV and love it, but my library looks like crap!
I downloaded the latest version of MetaX. When I try to open a movie in the program it comes up with the title on the left, but doesn't search for any artwork, cast, or anything details. What am I missing here? I did a youtube search for a tutorial, but it only came up with MetaX 2 from over 3 years ago and it wasn't the same.

I feel like an idiot, but I can't get it to work.

Firstly, Windows or OSX version of MetaX?

OSX version of MetaX hasn't been updated in years, so you'd be better off using one of the other tagging apps like Subler or iDentify.

I'm assuming your movie files are named with the movie title, but...

Clicking on the movie, on the right-hand side pane, usually initiates the search for results in the left-hand side pane. You can also type in something else in the search box and hit Return, above the left-hand results pane, to change up the search string. Surely something should show up for movies that aren't obscure.

Did you create an account with TagChimp? That's the only thing I can think of, besides any firewall/app-blocking problems, that might be hindering your searches.

EDIT: Despite the lack of updates, MetaX has been working perfectly fine for me and is just a middle-man, of sorts, between the movie file and the TagChimp database.

I dont use a Mac so I can't really recommend a Mac one, but as I posted try Suble or iDentify, these two seem to be quite popular. There are quite a few tagging apps for Mac so try them all and see which one best suits your own needs.

I ran with MetaX on Mac for a while with no problems, but I decided to give Identify a try and haven't looked back since! The ease of use and speed is such much better than that of MetaX!

I got MetaX to work finally, but if Identify is that much easier then I might switch to it.

yeah give it a try. It is in the mac app store, but if you search online, you can find a free download. The free version is missing some handy features (like automatically adding to itunes) but the tagging still works perfectly.

+1 for Identify. Started using MetaX when I started ripping movies but started running into problems and switched to Identify and wish I would have used it from the beginning. It works GREAT!

I bought the full version of Identify. Really easy to use, but what can I do if it doesn't find the artwork? I have tagged 30 or so movies so far, but it didn't find the artwork to 2 movies. Can I manually put it there?

iDentify pulls it's artwork from thetvdb.com, themoviedb.org, and tagchimp so if you don't pull in any artwork in your searches, more often than not I've found that I don't have the title formatted/spelled exactly right. If I manually change the name on the first tab and rescan, I usually get a better result. Ultimately, there are occasionally a few that either miss or have limited results. In those cases, I usually check out this site and rarely cannot find a good piece of cover art.

Stay far away from the OS X version of MetaX--far too many horror stories in these forums about media ruined by MetaX and as mentioned, it hasn't been supported by the developer for years.

I have done over 600 DVD movies and Identify has worked great, there have been about 5 movies that it did not work on and like tbayrgs says after checking those sites I had the name wrong. You can also find the movie on IMDB and enter the item code from there directly into Identify and that will some way help.

That's interesting to hear. I've got almost 600 movies and tv shows tagged with MetaX, all without a hitch. I'll have to Google these stories.

No need to use Google, just search this forum, though I'll admit I also tagged a substantial portion of my library with MetaX as well with no issues before I discovered iDentify--just kept reading about everyone else's problems and thought I better find an alternative before it happened to me.

Regardless of potential problems, IMO iDentify is a far superior tagging tool anyway.
