Well... I am going to need a computer for school this coming year, just to basically take notes and stuff. And some of my friends have Ipads and say that with the keyboard dock, its a perfect computer replacement (for a great price when you look at other Mac laptop prices).

But... I heard somewhere that when the new Ipod touch 4 is released this september (which I am getting regardless ), there will be a new Ipad coming out. I thought it would at least be another 6 months to a year before a new Ipad was released. Is that information about a new Ipad software update (4.0 with multitasking, etc), in which case a 1st gen ipad would be good to buy, since I could upgrade

And what is the deal with this "Iprod 2,1" i've been reading about? Is that the new Ipad? And if it is, are we guessing Sept release or March/April release? Or is the "2,1" the Ipad Mini (which I am not interested in, since I'm getting the Ipod Touch 4G anyways)

Plus, even if a new one is coming March/April, will the Ipad get a type of 4.0 before that? I've heard Sept/Oct for Ipad 4.0, so why would Apple release a brand new Ipad so soon?

Sorry this is just driving me CRAZY... since I need something for school and I would rather purchase sooner than later.

Thanks for any help, I honestly appreciate it

It is highly unlikely that there will be a new iPad until early next year, I think you are getting your wires crossed. There will be a new software in (your) autumn (my spring), but there are no real details as to its capability

Again, speculation that has been blown out of all proportion - I believe one website reported, from an unnamed source none the less, loose rumours that there was something in the works for release in the next month or two, and this has since spun out of control into the rumours for all kinds of new devices.

For more information please refer to these threads - I'm sure there are more and all the information you seek is contained therein. I would suggest that you familiarise yourself with the search feature as this usually yields immediate results, instead of waiting for someone with too much spare time (like myself) to reply.

The iPad is a supplementary device. It still has to sync back to iTunes and getting files on and off and the lack of printing support mean that it would most likely be pretty difficult to use alone. I plan on using mine for note taking and recording lectures. All real work and heavy lifting will be done on my Mac.

Maybe a few generations from now the iPad will be a standalone product but for the foreseeable future i'd say dont get your hopes up.

Yeah what he said... The iPad is great for media consumption, but even with the keyboard dock (which is going to be a pain to lug around to class) it just isn't as good for content creation as a full laptop will be. If you are entering college, you are going to find REAL quick that professors speak a heck of a lot faster than you can write or even type, and the iPad just isn't as quick as data entry as a full laptop is...

For school, if I could have only one device, it would be a MacBook pro 15". If I could have two, then I'd get an iPad as well... But an ipad alone just won't cut it.

I'm going to be a senior in high school.

I have an 08 MacBook Pro 17" ... when I go to college, I'll most likely be getting a new laptop.
(plus I have a new 24" iMac which I will also be taking to college next year... and will be using in sync with my iPad this year)

So you already have a laptop, therefore you *want* a new gadget for school. Buy the iPad. Otherwise you'll get to wait until either next April or next September for the 2nd generation. If your parents are footing the bill and you go to college next year though, they probably won't spring for both a brand new 15" MBP *and* a 2nd Gen iPad.

Up to you. NO new iPad will get released this year, that's just silly. The rumors are just rumors.
