Im a student living the united kingdom and have been using Mac's at college alot and want to move away from a Windows based machine and start using a Mac alot more. However im in a huge dialemma! Should i get a iMac (g5 - 1.8ish, 17") or a new solo mac mini (intel). Im a webdesigner so ill be using the system mainly for webdesign; using the macromedia suite and the adobe creative suite 2. However im also a music freak, so i ill also use the system for music creation. Which is 'faster'? Should i not consider the iMac because its no longer made by apple.

Help would be great!

thanks!

The iMac is still being made by Apple, but it is the intel iMac. They no longer make the G5 iMac just like they no longer make the G4 mini. Unless you have a large monitor that you want to connect to the mini, I think you will do better with the iMac.

When you get your Mac have a look at Freeway 4 ( http://softpress.com/index.php ). A really interesting web design program from a British firm. Available as a universal binary with a free trial.

Best wishes

Thanks for the advice! And the link that program looks nice, AND its british! Looks like ill get back to saving up then anly a few more hundred needed!

The G5 iMac will be a better buy if you don't have a keyboard, mouse, or even just a display. Even though the G5 iMac is no longer sold by Apple, the G5 PowerMac is and therefore they are still supporting the chips. And at the rumored time they will be switching the PowerMacs to Intel, they will have to support G5s for quite some time. So I think you have nothing to worry about. The G5 iMac will be a great machine for you! Plus you'll get a good buy as it is considered an "older" model now.

The imac definatly would serve you better in every way shape and form. It will be extra money well spent.

iMac. Definately.

Also, if you plan to play some games, iMac has a real video card (not that GMA950 in the mini), so your FPS will be playable/enjoyable :)

I agree with everyone here, I would get the iMac G5 because you can run all the adobe applications and it is a good solid Mac.
