I'm running a 2017 5k iMac and am eagerly awaiting my 16" Macbook Pro Max. I do mostly design work (UX design, some video and audio editing - not needing absolute color accuracy or gaming performance) with lots of apps and multiple browser windows/tabs open at a time. Now that I'm shopping for external displays, which admittedly I haven't done in years, I'm realizing there are alot more 4k options than 5k+ options and don't want to downgrade my display experience with my upgrade in umm.. machine experience.

Has anybody made this switch from using a 5k display to something like a 4k (ultrawide or not), and if so, how was the adjustment? Or, if you've stuck with 5k+ displays, what did you pick?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I had 2015 imac retina 5k than i sold it and switched to macbook pro M1. first i tried some cheaper Quad HD 27 and 24 inch monitors but it was hurting my eyes. Than i bought 2 thunderbolt P32U10 displays ( from lenovo) for circa 400 euro and i dont miss my 5K imac. Of course imac screen is superior to lenovo one but the difference is not big. And i like 32 inch more than 27, for me ideal screen size

Thanks for sharing what you learned about shopping around for 5k display alternatives. It's good to know that there are some good options out there and you've adjusted to 4k life (albeit, dual 4k). Perhaps that's the way to go for now!

Out of curiosity, when you went from a 27" to 32" (x2) - did that affect your viewing distance? I'm the age where I've bumped up the font size on my browser (ugh) so was curious if the 32" was a benefit there as well.

Sorry, i dont have dual screen setup, for me its gonna be overkill. For my purpose one external display and native display of macbook is fine. Second piece i have at my work. I forgot to mention first external display i bought was lg thunderbolt 5k 27 display ( 2 years old) It was fine display but image retention was terrible so he went outside a house. Than i have two quad HD dell monitors one 27 and second 24 in dual screen setup. I couldnt get use on that resolution ( compared with imac and build it macbook screen) So i sold it. Than i bought one lenovo thinkvision T32 and one T32U10 ( very simillar monitors. I was affraid that 4k is weak res on 32 inches but it is completely fine. I think that 4k and 5k monitors on 27 inches is little bit overkill. I like 32 much more because screen size. For me ideal screen size . If iam professional i will go to xdr display, but it is too expensive for regular user.

P.S: Ps my wife hate design of lenovo monitors, she liked imac very much :D She want threw out my monitor :(
