I just bought a Craigslist 2013 Mac Pro: 32 GB Ram, 1TB SSD, Dual Video, 3.5 mhz 6-core machine for $900. Right now, I have a 2012 Mac mini with 2 internal hard drives: a boot SSD and a traditional platter drive. I intend to get a traditional platter drive and have questions about the ideal connection protocol. Since it is likely an IDE platter drive, then maybe there is no advantage in thunderbolt 2? My options are USB 3.0 or TB2. If the transfer speed slows to the IDE bus speed, then the TB won't help.

I'm curious what the speed differences are between the IDE and the SSD drive on the mini via the internal bus – compared to IDE and the SSD drive on the mac pro when connected via TB2 or USB 3.0
