Need to convert my dad

I'm currently in need of a computer. i really want a mac, but my dad thinks they are too expensive. i need some reasons or whatever can help me to make him understand why a mac is a better choice. i know that the total cost of ownership makes macs cheaper but i don't know how to make him understand that.

1. You won't have to spend extra money on anti-virus software and yearly subscriptions.

2. Ask him "expensive compared to what?" (nicely) and have him show you - I can guarantee equally spec'd, they are about the same (PC vs. Mac).

3. Is he willing to spend a certain amount on a PC? Ask him to tell you andthen you can find a Mac fo rthat price.

4. Bundled software - iMove, iDVD, iPhoto, iTunes, Garageband - no PC comes with a package like this.

But seriously - compare the same specification PC to a Mac and you usually come pretty close. I think your dad is thinking of the $499 Dells that can run Pong.

If none of this budges him, get a job and buy one yourself.

well, tell your dad, since right now Mac is switching to Intel chip, G4 one are on sale, so there are cheap ones. (well, you have to want PPC one for this reason to stand any chance).
Also depends how much your dad know about PC, if he know alot, then it will be little bit harder to convince him. Maybe invite him to try some other people's mac for 2 hours. I do think people tend to like mac more and ignore the price a little bit if they really use it for a while.

Anyways, honestly, the best way is to bring him to an apple store/ friend or relative who has a mac, and show him exactly what makes macs so great, that's what convinced my dad.

Take your dad to lunch somewhere near your local Apple Store.

Find out what he considers most important in any computer system he would buy and have a store specialist show him a model with those needs in mind.

What will be your primary uses for this new system?
How much computer do you really need?

Will he consider going in half way with you to help you buy the system you want
if you earn the difference?

Macs are faster, no viruses, and are plain more reliable. If you get the iMac it comes with the built in iSight and you can run photobooth which provides hours of entertainment
But seriously macs are just better. More fun idk they're just EASY. And there's no annoying security messages every second like there is on a pc. What will you use it for?

Show your dad a really expensive mac and how awesome it is, and then mention that you can get a Mac Mini for $600 or a used iMac for $1000 or whatever.

There should be several things you could explain to your father. Here are a few to get you started:

1. Lack of viruses, spyware, etc ...
2. Total cost of ownership is less on a Mac
3. A more stable platform
4. UNIX based, explain to him that people with UNIX skills get paid more
5. There's a misconception that Macs are expensive

When our family was going to move and I didn't want to, I used GarageBand to create a loop of me saying "I want to stay here. I don't want to move." And then I made that track really quiet and put on a repetitive piano jingle on top. I burned it to a CD, played it outside my parents' bedroom every night after they fell asleep. And, guess what? We never moved!

Bring him to your nearest Apple Store. Let him play around with some Macs there and ask questions. That's how I converted my dad. We also went to one of those "Getting started with Mac" classes at the Apple Store.

I had a blast sitting through the free Garage Band orientation class.
