need to hook up two macs to internet asap...

okay ive got sbc internet service (dsl) and currently i only can have one mac at a time hooked up to the internet... i have to unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into the other puter if i want to get on the internet on the other puter.

i am throwing a party on sat and other then the people being able to do the usual... drinking... watching the game on big screen and playing poker or cards and or chess i want them to be able to surf the web if they would like.

since i have two puters... an emac and a powerbook i want to see what it would take to be able to hook both puters up to internet access. i want the easiest possible way to do it ... the cheapest if possible... i dont care if it drains the time getting on the internet from both puters.


so what do i need a router? please advise me on what i need to get so i can hook this up asap. the emac doesnt have an airport card... only the powermac..... so software base station is out of the question i believe.


if i have to buy a router then so be it..... but i know how hard those things are too hook up. any help would be appreciated.

You have two options.

Option #1 (if you have AirPort): Set up one Mac to connect to the Internet via Ethernet. Have the other Mac share its Internet connection via AirPort.

Cost: $0 (if you have the necessary hardware)

Option #2: Buy a router. Connect the Ethernet cable from modem to router, and two more Ethernet cables from the router to your Macs.

Here is a router for you.

Pick up this Linksys router from Best Buy for $60 - $20 mir - $30 mir = $10

Hopefully someone else will have a better option for you.

Best Buy Linksys 802.11b Router

Remember to buy two new Ethernet cables to connect your two computers.

Once you have this router plug the Ethernet from the Modem into the WAN port on the router.

Then, plug your two computers into the 4 available ports on the back of the router.

Its not THAT simple, but its close.

to the poster who posted the first response--- by "airport" im assuming you mean base station. if so... yeah... i unfortunatly dont have one.


the other info if gotten from you all is exactly what i need.... to consider my options... thanks. looks like im going to have to go with the router for now.... hope its not a hard install. thanks for the help guys!

Actually I think he means airport cards in each Mac.

Of course, there's a 3rd option. Hook up 1 Mac to the DSL modem. Hook up the other via Firewire cable, and then share the internet connection via firewire.

But, ultimately, the best solution is a router. FYI, you don't have to buy a Apple wifi router. You can get a NetGear or LinkSys wifi router that has ports on it, plug THAT into the DSL modem, hook the eMac to the ports on the router, and use the laptop with Airport.

Best long term option.......Get a router.

You will have another party someday, right? I tend to favor Linksys routers.

Network the two machines using Firewire

Using IP over FireWire

You can set up your computer to connect to other computers over FireWire, using the Internet Protocol (IP).
1 Connect a FireWire cable to the FireWire ports on the computers you want to connect.
2 Open System Preferences and click Network.
3 Choose Network Port Configurations from the Show pop-up menu.
4 Click New, and then choose FireWire from the Port pop-up menu. You can give the new port configuration a name, such as FireWire.
5 Drag the port configuration to the top of the Port Configuration list. This ensures the port is assigned an IP address using DHCP.
6 Click Apply Now.

If you don't drag the FireWire port configuration to the top of the Port Configuration list, you need to choose Manually (or "Using DHCP with manual address") from the Configure IPv4 pop-up menu, and then enter an IP address.


Enable Internet Sharing on the Mac with the modem connection.
Sharing your Internet connection

If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can share its connection with other computers on your local network.

For example, if your computer is connected to the Internet using a DSL modem and has an AirPort Card installed, you can share the DSL connection with other AirPort-equipped computers.
1 Open System Preferences, click Sharing, and then click Internet.
2 Choose a network port from the "Share your connection from" pop-up menu.
3 Select "Built-in Ethernet" or AirPort depending on which computers will share your Internet connection. NOTE: After you enable the Firewire networking, you will see it here for sharing.

IMPORTANT: If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (built-in Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to prevent you from disrupting their network.

okay i cant get the other puter thats not hooked up to dsl to respond.

in the network status area. it says that firewire is currently active and says the ip add..... and that its connected via firewire.... but when i try to browse it says it cant find server.

I believe you have to enable certain sharing services on the Mac supplying the internet. Try enabling "Personal Web Sharing" and "Personal File Sharing"... I think that should do it.

yep done... still nothing. the network icon comes up on both computers.... but nothing.

Make sure you're internet sharing to computers using firewire. You can AIM me if you want. I'll try to help ya out.
