I am using a hacked Appletv with a 1tb external drive set to sync from itunes. This morning I woke up to find my PC crashed beyond repair. I don't mind reinstalling windows etc, but will I need to resync my 600GB of content to my appletv? Will naming the PC, drives the same as before fool it into thinking it's the same machine? Are there any files I could backup / restore on the PC to keep the sync settings? I've got all the files backed up but resyncing is going to take a very, very long time!

I had to resync from scratch when a similar thing happened to me.

After reinstalling windows I thought I had gotten away with it as all the files were still on Apple TV and it seemed to be fine and syncing ok. However upon checking it, what was actually happening was that it wasn't updating the files on the Apple TV ... it would play existing material on the ATV but wouldn't add new material or process any changes.

Nothing I tried changed it, in the end I had to reboot the Apple TV and resync the full library. I read up on it, and it seems to be a (relatively) well known bug that if you change pc (or reinstall windows), you have to resync the whole library from the start or itunes throws a wobbly.

Re:

I've sucessfully moved my library from one machine to another and found that i didn't need to wipe my iPhone, now I know its not the same device, but chances are if you back up the iTunes Library files (the .itl and .xml) files you should be able to moved this over once you have reinstalled and not have to add everything back/resync it back again.

Its worth a shot
