Need to replace my PowerBook G4

My 1.5 ghz G4 is just not cutting it anymore,to slow. The Imac 27 is way to big for my desk. Will I be making a big mistake by getting 3.33 ghz c2d with 4gb by not waiting if they bump up the 21.5 with a I3 or I5 ? I know either way it's going to be a Huge improvement of what I'm using. Thx

Don't go for anything Core i3 because that was designed for low-end computers. Anything Core 2 Duo will perform much better than anything Core i3. That being said, unless you have a dying need for the "best performance", Core i5 should last you a while.

i5 on a 21'5? Not happening my friend.

Do it this way:

1 - What are your needs?

2 - Do you need desktop or laptop?

3 - Future proof? or it doesn't matter?

4 - Will you be needing "high horse power" on the machine?

About the desk IMO, 80 cm depth for a 27', i know i got myself a new desk just for this baby and man, it was worth it

I don't see why a 21.5 inch iMac couldn't run an i5. Perhaps you're mistakening it with the current lynnfield variants of the i5 in the 27 inch iMacs.

I'd recommend waiting for the next i5 iMac. Buying a C2D might prove to be a bad decision, when you'll see the processor discontinued in the range in a few months time.

I have 3 unibody C2Ds (13/15" MBP, MBA) and I just decided that I'll get my old eMac from the garage, while I'll sell at least one of the MacBooks.

I remember the frustration after the Intel processors made it to the iMacs. Now see the difference between a C2D and a PowerPC iMac. I know that the difference between the two Intel ones are not as dramatic, but still - why not wait at least until the next refresh?

I'm not saying that they can't run i5. i'm just saying that's unlikely. Apple will always make two different sides on the desktop and laptop, for normal users and "semi-pro" users(or low-end and high-end), except the mac pro (it's a class on it's own lol), there as to be always different configurations for different people

I've ordered the top end 27" i7 as a replacement for my PBG4 (six years old!) and my girlfriends HP laptop, we'll probably get a MB or MBP at some point later on. It's true that the screen is huge, especially in a small apartment but I think the benefits of extra power and display outweigh the cons of the sheer size.

I must get a bigger desk too!

I'd say get the 27" or wait for an update on the smaller imac.

I'd love to get the 27,but it's just way to big for my desk and office. So when they do get around to refreshing the 21,what is the most likely upgrade? Will the C2D really seem outdated ?

Anyways core 2 duo is a huge step up from the PPC architecture. You will feel a huge performance boost from pretty much anything new you buy.
