I just bought a refurb mac mini!!!!! I am so glad to be an official mac user (besides my iphone and soon to be ipad!)

But be aware :the most important rule is that no matter how much the mini begs or crys; never, ever feed the mini with a dvd after midnight (which triggers its metamorphosis into a beast called a pc with windows 95 on ).

Hi, what model did you get? about to purchase this item but interested in how you perceive its performance running iLife apps esp Garageband and iVideo. I have read a lot of people saying its fine (as did apple) but then I read in magazines (apple ones) that they are really for browsing and light use!

It is fine, I run ilife (09) on my early 09 MacMini (2ghz - 4gb) with no issues. Also the same apps run perfect of my Macbook (2ghz -2 gb).

Some people may be trying to justify their expensive iMac or Mac Pro purchase. Sure the Mini is going to be slow for Final Cut Pro, but realistically for everyday use it is fine. I can wait 30-40 for handbrake to rip something, so to me it's not an issue. Plus for me the advantage of the MacMini is the low power consumption/low noise.

Though it is a PITA to take apart and update though, mind you after your 2nd or 3rd time you get used to it.

the minis are alright for everything really ,dont believe everything what magazines are writing the writers who write the articles had before they tested the mini tested possibly a maxed out macpro , so the verdict will be bad for the mini as the mini really cant keep up with a macpro , but i guess if you buy a mini you know that it will not perform like a mac which costs more then 3 times the money , but the mini is smaller and more quiet , you dont want to place a macpro in your bedroom and let it run all night or next to your tv

Thanks for the info. For the first time in my life as far as computers are concerned, I let my head rule my heart

I was dead set on a new 27inch i7 but have held off since November as other things have used up my spare finances.

However, order the mini yesterday (just the base model) for £360 as I had a contribution from a netbook insurance claim. Aim is to use this to dip my toes into the Mac/iLife etc and particularly web development (I use dreamweaver) and iphone/iPad development (which i have been following the CS193P course online).

I am sure this little beast will do the job and I aim to relook at the imacs as complete replacement for my PCs in the next few months but the mini relieves any pressure sss

The mac mini should come with a warning "Purchasing this Mac mini will lead to you spending more money on apple products"

I got my mini a few years back and loved the Mac experience. My house now looks like a small apple shop. (Excluding an Ipad but thats only because its not been released here yet)

Yeah, I thought It was a good deal that I was purchasing a Mini, for doing some of the Mac stuff I couldn't do on my PC ...

then 6 months later I end up spending on a 27 Corei7 Imac



BTW, it's a matter of taste I guess, but I still think the mini's only good for browsing & serve as a media player. Apps don't run that great on it, it feels very much like a laptop. The Imac on the other hand, fees like a real desktop

Ok, mini home and been in use about 5 hours now after finding a DVI-HDMI converter!!.. Anyway, this little machine is pretty cool (in my daughters words) and is a little powerhouse. I have been playing around and whilst it might not be an i5 ro an i7 imac, this little things seems more than capable of running any of the iLife apps. My PC was a core2Dduo 1.82 with 2mb so mini is a tad faster but I think the OS probably jhelps increase the gap. As I say, this is a taster machine for me ... not much money before committing to a possibly larger machine sometime in the future.

Machine found the network (didnt actually realise it was wireless... and also has bluetooth!).. found my printers, easily configures all my email for me etc etc.. faultless..

Mac Minis are awesome little machines. I've had two at various points in the last four years. Bought a first gen Intel mini, and then later bought a second gen off a friend after regretting the sale of the first. Prior roomate also has an Early 2009 edition. Small, quiet, and now that they have the Nvidia chipset in them, decently potent. Glad you're enjoying yours!

My fear is that if they get moved to the Core i3 Apple will stick them with Intel's HM55 chipset graphics which are built onto the i3 chip. After owning two Minis with Intel graphics, I'd shudder to see that happen again.

yep, i can agree that the one thing they most definitely are is silent... I have never heard a machine so quiet!

I got a Mac mini today, I only became a mac user 2 weeks and 4 days ago when I got my first ever mac, a MBP. I have been an IBM PC user for nearly 20 years and my Mac has constantly delighted me, its as marvellous as when I got my Amiga 500.

It has been so splendid that `i bought a mac mini today, however I cannot use it yet, my monitor has no DVI input, and my 42inch Plasma TV, which takes a DVI signal has insufficient resolution to display the macs screen.

As soon as I get a VGA adaptor, or use a DVI monitor ILL lower the Macs res so I can use it with my television.

So I have owned a mac mini for 8 hours and haven't been able to use it yet.
