I've been running Big Sur on a backup MacBook Pro for several weeks without any major issues. Today, I installed the latest BS beta on my 2017 iMac and discovered a problem with the printer drivers for my Canon MF 731 color laser. It prints the colors on a sheet, but no black text. Works OK on the MacBook. On the laptop, the driver version is listed as 2.0 and allows me to not only print OK but to check the toner cartridge levels, etc.

On the iMac, it's showing driver v10.11.3 which I am guessing are the generic Apple drivers because I cannot check the toner levels with this driver. I downloaded latest available update (Catalina) from Canon, but BS blocks the install saying the package "is not made for this version of MacOS".

Obviously, I need to wait for Canon to update their drivers for BS.

But, in the meantime, is there a way to "fool" BS and allow the install of the Catalina drivers? (And, yes, I have submitted a bug report to Apple.)

Interestingly, the FAX/Scanner functions work perfectly on the iMac!! Only problem is the black text not showing up!!

Thanks in advance

Ken

UPDATE: I was able to restore normal printing by deleting the printer and reinstalling using AirPrint vs the normal LPD method.

I see you sorted it out.

But this is why I dislike canon and their Mac drivers. This has been recurring for years. It is technically not Big Sur (or Apple) who blocks installation, but Canon put code in their installers so they only work with the OS versions they officially supports. And canon doesn’t always update their drivers, actually if the product is not in their current lineup, they likely won’t.

the funny thing is that the older drivers often work fine, so upgrading is ok, but new install not.

Hi, I managed to have my old MP620 working on Big Sur ß11 copying Library and user/Library from Catalina to Big Sur.
Printer and Scanner work in USB. By now, only the printer works on the network, I try to have Scanner working on network too, as it works on Catalina.

There is now an installer that works on the Europe Canon site. I'm using LBP6230DW, but it seems to include drivers for other Canon printers as well.

I installed the new driver for the LBP6230, which is version 1.5.7, but when I add the printer, it uses version 1.5.4 which is the one that doesn't work. How do I force the new driver?

Thanks.

Nevermind. It works. Apparently there is a glitch that causes it to show the old version even though the new one is installed.
