Need to upgrade to SL on G5 with broken screen.

Hi all,

I am running an Intel G5, 10.5 iMac and am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard. My problem is that my iMac's screen is completely disfigured from an unfortunate accident and since then I have set my display to mirror onto an external monitor. However, when I restart my Mac to install Snow Leopard via a partitioned hard drive, my external monitor seems to have defaulted into functioning as a dual monitor, not as a mirrored display.

As a result I can't see what's happening during the installation process. What I need is a way for my Mac to use my external monitor as the primary display during the installation process, but I'm at a complete loss as to how to achieve this. I can see and move my mouse around if I drag it way off to the right, but I've tried blind-clicking and dragging from the opposite screen to no avail.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello-

In order to help you, the MR community probably needs to know what computer you have.

You can not have an Intel G5.

The G5 iMac looks identical to the newer Intel models, however the key difference is that the G5 iMac runs on a PowerPC G5 Processor, and the Intel, runs an an Intel. (Of course)

If you're trying to install SL on a G5, sorry but you're out of luck.
If it is a Intel iMac (White or Aluminium) there is hope.

If it's Intel, not G5, then get another Intel Mac with firewire port and install SL via Target disk mode. If you don't have one, maybe one of your friends has?

You either have a PowerPC G5 if you have a G5. There is no Intel G5. Only a PowerPC G5, and a Intel Core Duo, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i5, or an Intel Core i7. Maybe give us the first 5 digits of the serial number so we can see when your computer was made, incase you don't know what you have, the 5 digits will tell us. The first 2 characters tell you the factory the Apple product was built in, and the 3 character is a digit. It says the year. The 4th and 4th characters (digits too) say the week it was buily in. So 9E9111FE201

Year in this case, it was built in 2009

Week of that year. Week 11. So it was built in March 2009

Well lets say you do have a intel computer with a with no internal monitor.
And you also have a retail copy of 10.6
You best bet to install it is though target disk mode with another intel computer.

Put your iMac in target disk mode.
Have another computer boot from the 10.6 install (while its connected to your iMac with a firewire cable)
At the select the destination screen,select the iMac HD and your good to go
