I have screwed my MacBook Pro 2019 I made a usb install of Catalina and was gonna do what I used to do and deleted the partition on the disk and now can’t install it, it says I need to change startup security utility but its won’t let me, I know it’s something to do with t2 chip but now I’ve wiped the machine what can I do?

How do I do that, it’s now somehow installing Mojave must have been on a separate partition but I wanted Catalina as fresh can I do what you said without the security start up?

Internet recovery installs the version of macOS that was shipped with the Mac. I don't see why there would be any difference worth worrying about between a totally clean Catalina install and a clean Mojave install updated to Catalina. Just let the Mojave install finish up and then update.

Ok thanks, I kinda wanted it fresh with Catalina but I see that’s the only optiton I have

If you want to change security settings it can be done in normal recovery mode . There’s a tab at the top option that allows you to change security boot settings

Booting into command + R and under the utilities tab. You can change the startup security

Can I install Mojave how it’s doing it then change the startup security and do the same and install Catalina from usb if I allow it

Boot to internet recovery using

Option-⌘-R

instead of

Command (⌘)-R

This will make the Mac look for the latest version of Mac OS supported on your Mac instead of Mojave.

Internet recovery installs the version of macOS that shipped with the Mac.
There are two versions of internet recovery as I indicated in my post, one that installs the version that shipped with your Mac and one that installs the latest officially supported version for your Mac.

No the internet recovery will work, and you’ll need to supply the Apple ID associated with your machine.
Because of what you did wiping the disk the T2 chip won’t allow the boot from your usb device, this is effectively to stop people who steal laptops from wiping and setting up as new.

Cos i disabled startup security to allow bootable now it’s working but would it install all drivers for my Mac the same way you said to do it, as now it’s installing it through the usb

Yes all the relevant drivers would be installed via internet recovery.

Oh sweet. I didn't know that was a thing. I'm sure that'll come in handy in the future. Thanks!

I get that but installing it the way I have from the usb would that still install latest drivers for my mac
Yes installing from the usb device would also install all required drivers, but this is not a clean install of Catalina, just saying :)

How is it not clean if I deleted my mac partition and installed fresh off the usb? What difference would it be to do the internet recovery

I thought you had in fact used internet recovery to install Mojave again and then enable boot to usb again and now you were upgrading to Catalina from the usb device, apologies if I’ve got that wrong.

Yeah no I installed Mojave then changed the security start up to allow usb boot and installed Catalina from usb deleted mojave partition so doing this way I’m now booted in Catalina fresh but was wondering would the usb install have all latest drivers the same way I would do it through internet recovery

I believe it would be pulling the same exact image from the internet that you’ve used to make the usb media. when they release bunch of updates in the future to this version you might feel like making a new usb version to keep up with any new drivers etc, if your ever likely to want to repeat a clean install of Catalina :)
