I made the dumb decision to spend over $4000 on a 16" MBP about 6 months ago and only got 1TB of disk space. Right now there's 80gb free and that'll go pretty fast. From everything I've ready the HD is not upgradeable. Has anyone ever bought an external SDD and used a hard drive sleeve so it's semi-permanently attached to the computer? Any options I'm not thinking of ? The last thing I want to do is sell it and buy another just because I need more space. This is what I was thinking of using: http://tinyurl.com/5n76av78 and http://tinyurl.com/msvvrann

I was going to suggest to at least get a Thunderbolt enclosure and pair it with a decent NVMe for speed. However, having this live permenately in a sleeve may cause heat issues and subsequent throttling.

Edit: is your MBP mainly being used at home? Another option then would be to set up a NAS and access data over your network.

yes, I have 4TB Samsung Shield that I tote with my Macbook Pro.. works great. The problem now though is that SSD prices are skyrocketing. Maybe wait it out a bit. I keep a Samsung T7 1TB attached to my iMac for peecee gaming in boot camp. Works fine. I wouldnt attach a sleeve to the laptop though. Just plug it in before you boot and let it sit on the table..

Get an external drive. USB3.1 gen2 should do fine.

But you don't need it attached all the time, I would think.
Nor may you "need" all that stuff on the internal drive.
How much of it is just "sitting there", unused?

Start "off-loading" the seldom-accessed stuff to the external.

But remember:
Now that you have TWO drives, you have to BACK UP two drives.
So... that means another backup drive, as well.

First thing; 8% of your internal disk is free space? In my book that's seriously close to the edge. SSDs work harder with less space free. I think you should first spend some time working out if all that data can be thinned out some.

I've always found DaisyDisk a very useful tool to get a view of what's taking up space. You might be surpriced what you find, and how much is recoverable space. It's not free, but very cheap, and I think their demo is fully functional for some time.
