All,
I have installed 128GB SSD (OCZ) with 6gb/s interface to my Mac Mini 2010, everything went well but my Negotiated Link Speed for the SSD is only 1.5gb/s!
i have the latest fw and latest update on Mac Mini...what can be the issue?
Thanks

you wasted your money putting that in a 2010 mac mini without coming to this site.

(I could be wrong)

the 2010 mac mini is sata II it down links a lot of sata III drives to sata I speed.

many can not be changed to sata II speed which is the max on a 2010 mac mini.

go to ocz website and check forums to see if your drive can be boosted to sata II.

some sata III drives can be made to run at sata II on your mini. If you can find a samsung series 800 or a samsung series 470/810 on ebay both will run at sata II speed with 0 hassle

this should run at sata II speed:

I gave up on ocz years ago when it comes to ssds but

below is ocz link for apple

well we have had a few people have your problem with the ocz and the owc ssds sata III types inside of 2010 minis. some got the ssds to run at sata II speeds some did not. As you say you can put it in a new mini and btw even at sata I speed it is still fast for all but long copies.

well...after applying the fix the negotiation speed link still 1.5 ...:confused:

yeah you are not the first one that can't boost to sata II.

That 2010 mini is tricky it is picky about 4gb ram sticks and ssds.

I have found samsung ram and samsung ssds series 800 or series 810/470 both sata II are consistently the best in that mini. I buy upgrade and then sell minis on ebay for a side business

> I have done a few hundred since 2006.

The 2010 mini was the most picky mini for ram and ssds.

Now it is a good piece of gear once you got it modded right. Here is why

It can run;

leopard = (with a hack)

snow = fully supported

lion = fully supported

mountain lion = the developers i know say it works

windows 7 = with bootcamp parallels or vmWare fusion

windows 8 = the developers i know say yes

linux = yes

plus has a dvd/rom drive to load software. even though it is a bit slow it will do all that.

Back to you, the ssd drive at sata I is still fast for iops and that is the most important part.

you get close to 80 % of sata II on the iops . on the clone you get 55% of sata II speed.

the first thumbnail shows an internal sata III ssd
(mushkin 240gb enhanced chronos deluxe) in a 2011 mac mini at sata III speeds.

the key iops are random 4k 222mb/s write and random 4k read 75mb/s

second thumbnail shows a samsung 810 series in a 2010 mac mini at sata II speed.

you can see the key iops (4x random write and read) are 75 mb/s and 9 mb/s

you can download xbench and see what you get at disk test only you will be close to my sata II numbers of 75mb/s and 9mb/s.

third shot shows link speed on the 2010. speed is sata II.

A friend here at work put an OCZ SATA-III drive into a MacBook of the same vintage. It failed to even recognize the drive! Search Google and this forum for people with success with SSDs.

My MacBook Pro (with SATA-I interface) works fine with an Intel Series-320 160GB SSD (SATA-II).

I have a 2010 Mini arriving Tuesday (RFB MAC MINI 2.66/2X1G/320/SD/AP/BT-USAG0H50LL/A) and had narrowed my choices to these 2
http://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-2-5-I...&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+128gb+ssd+830+series

Would you choose one of these, or go with your previously mentioned choices.

I also have the Crucial 8GB memory on the way, so was leaning towards Crucial for
the hard drive too.

WELL like I said that machine is picky. I would push this choice.

using samsung ram ddr3 pc3 8500 laptop. cost more is hard to find, but it is the gold standard for the 2010 mini.

sticks are 24 bucks each use tech101 to get a discount

I gave you a screen shot on the order page.

I use pny ram but I buy 20 to 40 sticks at a time.

I get them at 30 a pair but they have a 10-15 % fail rate.

I test them for a day and about 10-15 % fail. If they pass they last for months even years.

The samsung cost more but they are flawless. Those sticks are relabeled supertalent but the chips are samsung. For a modder doing volume the pny are fine once or twice a year I return the duds to pny. For some one doing 1 mod I don't tell people to buy the pny. the crucial ram sticks are a little better then the pny maybe 5% to 10% fail rate.

As for an ssd the samsung 830 is really quite good but so is the crucial m4. I look for price. I do say try to get the 256gb model it is faster then the 128gb models in both samsung and crucial. Once again putting a ssd in the 2010 mini is tricky the drive has 2 extra heat sensor cables that can break so be slow and deliberate.
