Neighbours using my network?

I have a Fios modem connected to an Airport Extreme via Bridge mode - the Airport has wireless activated with a password - however, every few days I will see strange computers connected to my network. I have also been expericing network drop outs every 2-3 minutes or so.

I will see computer names like 'MiguelM-PC' or 'Mendonza PC' , etc - I block their access to my services, change passwords, etc - but new names pop up. Is this some glitch with Verizon or are people really getting in on my network?

Did you checked the modem? May be its open and bridge mode / password on the airport would be useless...Or your computer shares the internet connection (Preferences/Sharing)

I did, the wireless on the fios modem is disabled - it is in bridge mode with the airport - and the airport network is secured with a password - I just double checked with the iphone and it requires a password to log on.

Internet sharing is not enabled, and when I launch airport utility - the list of wireless clients does not show the extra people on my network - they only show up in my modem's network (when you type in 192.168.1.1 and enter the admin interface)

So how is someone getting on the network if the wireless is disabled for the modem?

Get a pen and paper, and find your mac's and other device's MAC ADDRESS. From time to time check the log to see if any unknown addresses show up. If so, then someone is leeching off your internet. MAC/physical addresses are unique hexidecimal code that identifies each Network card inside every PC that uses Ethernet. No two MAC addresses are the same.

Secondly, reset your modem and airport password. I like WAP instead of WEP.

If that's done I hardly believe anyone can be in your network.

You could set the router part of your modem to only allow a connection from your Airport. Then your Airport can manage the connections to your computers in the house and no one else can get in.

I have a dim recollection of once reading that with Fios sometimes neighbors' computers show up on your network because of the fiber network architecture. They're not actually connected but it appears that way.

Of course, this is dim recollection so I wouldn't spend too much time pursuing my lead.

If you can see the other computer names, ping them and see what IP address is returning.

Sounds like both FIOs and Airport are both giving out IP addresses (dynamic IP). If so, that will explain why you see the extra machines in FIOS router, not in Airport. Re-check your bridge settings.

If you're going to enable dynamic IP on the FIOS router, check if it support MAC address filtering.
