Hello

I’m going to upgrade my mac os, it’s currently running 10.5.8 !!!

Specs as follows:

MacPro3,1
Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2.8 GHz
2 processors 8 cores with 6GB RAM

Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4870

I have Snow Leopard on disc and have backed up with time machine. So what’s stopping me!? Well, the last time I upgraded anything on it was back in 2013 and I think I’ve forgotten my administrators password. I have 4 possibles at the ready, pretty sure it’s going to be one of them. But wondering what’ll happen if I get it wrong and how many chances do I have to get it wrong before it’s bricked? Would also be interested to know how up to date I can bring my machine given it’s specifications?

So very nervous right now any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First.... you’re in the wrong forum. You posted in the area for iPhone operating systems.

Second... in Mac OS, you can reset the passwords by booting from the install DVD.

Third... on a fresh install, your old password is irrelevant anyway (since all your data is already backed up according to you).

Fourth... Officially, you can upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.6. But with some hacks, you can bypass that limit and install High Sierra 10.13.5.

Yay n00b alert!!! Sorry about that.

Thanks for getting back to me, I turned my house upside down finding the install discs and think I’m ready to go.

Thanks again flyinmac, much appreciated.
