macOS NetBeans (maybe SUNWAppServer?) very slow on my PBG4

Hi,

After using Eclipse for quite a while, I'm trying to work on a webapp project in NetBeans, and i'm finding it very slow on my 1.5 GHz Powerbook with 1GB of RAM. Eclipse runs a bit sluggish on this hardware, but NetBeans is barely usable, especially when I have the Sun WAppServer running at the same time.

Are there any tips for speeding up NetBeans? Is it just me?

I'm assuming that when I upgrade to an Intel-based Mac it will run much faster, but I would also love it if someone could verify that for me.

I tried downloading NetBeans to learn on at work, but it ran so slowly on my WinXP machine that I gave up on it. I have tried 1 or 2 other IDEs that blew it away (don't remember which ones right now).

I'm in the same boat. My PowerBook G4 1.25GHz with 1.25GB is still my primary machine. I'm mostly waiting for Apple to finally announce the updated MBP before buying (if all goes well, I should have the funds to upgrade this weekend )

There are 2 things that you can do.

You can switch to the built-in Tomcat server if you don't need to use EJBs or JMS. That alone will help.

You can also modify the NetBeans memory settings and allow NB to grab more memory. The file to modify is NetBeans.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/etc/netbeans.conf .

Pass on the 1.6 Beta

If you are using that 1.6 JAVA Apple Beta that will slow down every java app including NetBeans (At least on PowerPC hardware). I find that allowing NetBeans 1GB of heap will speedup the app, if you have the extra RAM to spare in your machine.
