Since the 'update' to El Capitan I haven't checked Netflix on my Mac Pro. But, just now, I decided to start a documentary to kill some time, only to be surprised by the following nonsense:

Ridiculous, who wants to use Silverlight nowadays, or ever before? CPU hogging crapware for HDCP compliantness... Just like Flash, it should be banned.

After some digging, wondering why the HTML5 player won't start (since it works just fine with Youtube 4K) I came across this:

Wut? My machine cannot decide on its own what it can or cannot playback based on a year? And then just simply install Silverlight crap on your system to continue... Chrome does seem to work, but Safari really is my browser of choice so my question would be: Are there others who have seen this / have a workaround that does not include Silverlight for Safari?

Same thing happened on my 2010 cmp. Safari doesn't have html5 video drm. Just use chrome.

It's an issue with Xeons not supporting Intel's QuickSync. Use Chrome.

Shouldn't waste time with Cowspiracy anyway. There's a lot of quackery and pseudo-historical documentaries on Netflix. This one has been roundly debunked by the scientific and farming communities as fearmongering, ideologically driven codswallop. We should consume less meat and be much kinder to animals, but we shouldn't allow people who follow irrational cults to hijack our ecological concerns.

Hmmm, yeah, I'll switch to Chrome then when I want to watch something on Netflix, thanks.

Haha, well I really only clicked on something to kill time, the cover looked interesting. Don't worry, they don't produce humans more meat-loving than me. I wouldn't be bothered in the slightest. I do agree that a lot of documentaries on Netflix are on a "History Channel" level indeed

Worst thing is that many of these popular internet documentaries are funded by members of various new age cults which they don't declare until investigated. If anyone is conspiring against modern society it's them. But that's a discussion best left to the various pro-science groups on social media.

/Tinfoil hat.

To the OP, Chrome is a better browser anyway. They just need to improve the performance and match Safari because it eats the battery like crazy.

I use this Chrome extension to freeze tabs so they won't eat up resources and make my battery die. Don't miss Safari at all.

Anyone worried about selling their info to Google through Chrome needs to take off their Tinfoil hat, we've already sold our souls to be on the internet anyway (Facebook, Twitter, Google searches...)

Because of that battery/power hunger of Chrome I don't really enjoy using it on OSX, I really do like Safari a lot. On Windows, Chrome is my preferred browser indeed, no tinfoil hat issues here.

Safari is less power hungry on OSX because it suspends unused tabs, uses compression to compress tab memory, etc. With this Chrome extension you can get similar performance in Chrome.

Yes I read your post, but why would I if I already enjoy Safari to the fullest without such an extension?

Except for the Netflix stuff (which I don't watch more than once a month on my PC anyway) I haven't come across anything I would want to use Chrome rather than Safari. Safari flies and is buttery-smooth on OSX next to it being the native browser.

To each their own....I always liked Safari, but could never use it full time. Chrome just feels faster to me.
