Netflix questions

Anyone that uses Netflix to stream to your Apple TV, does it do HD? or does HD content cost more? Is the quality good? it seems like for $8 a month it's a good deal, especially if I could just dump HBO and other pay channels and use that instead. I could prolly drop my DVR too if I could just get whatever shows I want on demand with netflix too.

I also have a PS3 that I could use to stream also, but I think I'd rather use the Apple TV.

I think that mine streams in HD. Well, it should anyways. Netflix wont do on demand TV Shows. It will give you older series but not the ones that you just missed yesterday.

oh... well in that case, I could still just it as a HBO & stars replacement, right? will the $8 a month cover brand new movies that just came out on DVD too, just streamed instead?

I could always keep the DVR and basic cable. Or worst case if I get rid of them I could just subscribe to the 2 or 3 shows I'll actually watch on iTunes. I pretty much just have History or Discovery channel on in the background while I'm doing stuff, don't really watch that much TV anymore. I have HBO and Stars as part of my bundle and it's been months since I watched either of them... just wasting cash right now.

You should go check out what Netflix has on streaming. Usually not the just released movies. It depends on if they have a deal with the movie company. They really don't have much on streaming but they do have a lot of kids shows which is why I like it.

I would not characterize them as "not having much" on streaming, there really is a lot on there. Just not much new, for it to replace cable (which we have done in our house) you will need to change your viewing habits.

Well I just went and signed up for the free trial. I checked it out, added a few movies to my queue. I'll mess with it for a couple weeks and see if it's worth keeping, but it seemed to work just fine. Since I don't watch cable all that much, it might be a good replacement for me. My girlfriend and I usually watch newer movies and our favorite shows at her place since she DVRs everything for us, so my DVR at my place is just kind of a waste. There's a couple shows I like that she doesn't and I figure I can just get those through iTunes.

A long time ago I decided new movies were a extravagance I didn't want to afford so I did Blockbuster, checked out movies from the library and then joined Netflix. Life was good and I missed paying a lot of $$$ on new bad movies. By the time the DVD is released you know if it's a stinker. Then Red Box came along and I dropped the DVD part of Netflix.

We only have sub-basic cable so with the kids Netflix is streaming most of the day.

If you buy a Roku box instead of the ATV2, you can stream new TV shows from Hulu Plus (another $8/mo). Roku also gives you access to lots of other video sources, including Amazon. If you have a Prime membership, a bunch of the Amazon content can be streamed for free.
