Sony Joins Growing List of World-Class CE Manufacturers That Enable Netflix Members to Instantly Watch Movies Streamed to the TV via the Internet

LOS GATOS, Calif., July 9, 2009 – Netflix, Inc., (Nasdaq: NFLX) the world's largest online movie rental service, today announced a partnership with Sony Electronics that will enable Netflix subscribers to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix on Sony's BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs and on previous BRAVIA models compatible with Sony's BRAVIA Internet video link module.

In the fall, Netflix members on an unlimited plan can use the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix.

Sony is the latest consumer electronics (CE) company to partner with Netflix. Other CE companies partnering with Netflix are Microsoft (with the Xbox360), LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo and VIZIO.
Netflix members pay as little as $8.99 a month for unlimited streaming from a library of more than 12,000 choices and unlimited DVDs by mail from a library of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.
"Sony has been a world leader in consumer electronics for decades," said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. "We are proud to include Sony Electronics among our CE partners who continue to provide new and exciting ways for Netflix members to instantly watch movies and TV episodes in their living rooms on their TVs."

I just don't get Sony. I really don't. Bravia TVs? OK, fine. Why leave your gaming console out of the agreement?

Because Sony isn't as tight nit as Apple in the sense the right hand has no clue what the left is doing. The Bravia development team has no clue what the PS3 team is doing and vice versa. I'd put my money on the fact that this is as big of a surprise to the PS3 department as the rest of us.

AHHHH. I was actually hoping that PS3 would gain netflix compatibility!! I cannot decide if I want to get a ps3 to watch blu-rays and dvds on my bedroom tv, or another 360 to watch dvds and net flix streaming. This does not help at all.

Seems like a major oversight to me. I think the Bravia TVs even use the PS3's XMB interface.

It sounds like it's about protecting the current business model of the PSN store.

I use my PS3 to stream Netflix, Hulu, CBS, ESPN etc... If you have a Windows based PC it can use a program called "Playon" that works as a type of media server and over wireless your PS3 will see it and it works rather well . I think you can try it for 14 days free then it's like $30 dollar, one time fee to continue.

Your forgetting the $50 a year one must pay for Gold XBOX LIVE membership. Not a big deal if your already a big online gamer...but to compare apples to apples, you have to include this cost as well.

Netflix on 360 for a year minimum:

$8.99 X 12 = 107.88
$50 Gold Fee (can be obtained for less however, on ebay)

Total = $157.88

Thats roughly equal to 40 movies off or Itunes per year.

As always, its a question of how much you watch...if you watch less than 40 movies per year...iTunes is cheaper...

Also...content...you won't find as many movies you want online with netflix (however will do have access to them via mail if you don't mind waiting)
