hi all, i have been wanting to setup/get XBMC on Apple TV 2 for some time now. i thot about setting up a cheap NAS at home for the purpose as well. but after having done some researching, the budget of getting the ATV2 + NAS box (i picked Synology D211j) + drives will be a lil bit out of my budget... :(

so... i thot about the setup as captioned, since i already own a Netgear router with the ReadyShare feature. i think it's technically possible:)confused:), but i just want to ask around if someone here has tried similar setup and is the performance acceptable?

I have a netgear wnr3500L and have been having trouble getting the USB drives recognized. Only one time I was able to get the router to see a usb stick I put in (formatted fat32) and stream to xbmc on the atv2. Ever since then nothing has worked. I've reset the router, updated the firmware, put on ddwrt/tomato, tried two other usb drives...nothing works. I've pretty much given up on it.

I have a 2TB drive hooked to my Netgear WNDR3700 via USB.
Works fine streaming to XBMC on the ATV2 via DLNA or Samba sharing.

I did have problems with using FAT filesystems. If you format your drive with ext2 (Linux) partition it will work much better and have support for large files over 4GB.

thank you very much for the replies! now that the untethered jb is out, imma hurry over to get an ATV2 and go home to try to set this up! :D
