So I updated NetNewsWire last night and I 100% hate it.

Every article I read disappears and I cannot go back to it. :(

Is this supposed to be a feature? I want it to save all of my read articles!

This change to only display unread articles was made in response to request in the NNW forums. I prefer only seeing unread as the screen is less cluttered with a long list of feeds without articles.

I do understand your wish to have access to older articles though and there have been comments in the NNW forums requesting this feature, or the ability to toggle show read/unread.

Good, I hope there will be a toggle soon. I wish it would be per feed. For instance, on my AppStore feed, I only want to see the one ones, but on my Slashdot feed I would like to see all.

I wish we could add subscriptions too.

Not that I see...that would be great though.

I agree that would be great. I like the update a lot other than the deleting of read articles w. no way to mark as unread. You could save as a clipping though or email it to yourself...

I love the way this hides my unread feeds. So much better.

to each his own I guess.

and now I get a red number badge on the icon. very helpful.

I hope they keep this lightweight. this is not a desktop app.

You're not alone. I hate it too. Earlier I was reading a feed and accidentally navigated away from it by tapping a link, then tried to go back and it was gone. I never got to read most of it, just have to wait 'till I get back to my Mac.

We should be able to view read articles (perhaps a user selectable number, 25 or something) that are synched to your Newsgator account.

aaqulib.

currently not.
and the developer has said he is not trying to replicate the desktop so I am unsure if this will be added.

he needs to add the clipping button first IMO which would partial solve the problems people are having above.

oh wait. it does have a clipping option (in the popup menu.)

I'm dumb.

I gotta say the new version positively flies! and I went thru 50 feeds while waiting for someone and the battery did not budge.

excellent upgrade.

Only much better. The nativeness of the app just makes it that much nicer. Much more responsive.

True, I was referring more to read items not being shown. I normally use NNW on my Mac but have been using NewsGator this week as I am in Spain and there is no WiFi here to get my MacBook online.

where is the clipping option? and how does it work? I just downloaded netnewswire for my mac and iphone... the desktop version is great tho i still don't understand how the clipping folder works... the iphone version is a little buggy still... for example, if i hit a subscription with 30 feeds and don't read any of them and go back to the feeds screen, the number of unread feeds disappears... also, it won't sync one of my subscriptions for some reason... a few more tweaks and this thing would be great

Hi. Yes. It does need another update since it is too "greedy" on the download IMO (does not wait until idle time to download more) But I do love it overall.

clipping:

Go into and read one of the stories
click the Lower left arrow menu
click add to clippings
done.

oh so once you add it to the clippings, you will no longer see it on your iphone but it will be synced to your desktop clippings folder?

Are You Sure?

I know if you have your newsfeeds 'foldered' into groups when you click on the folder it only shows you unread news but I find that if I expand the tree under the folder and click on the actual feeder I get all of the articles, read or unread...

i second that. i switched to newsstand and i must say i really like it. the flag option was much needed in netnewswire

I stopped using NetNewsWire recently as the clippings thing (which I use a lot) hasn't been working for weeks.
I started using Byline and much prefer it. OK, it hasn't got folder views (yet, the devs are adding it this month), and it's not free, but what it has got over NetNewsWire is:

If you "Star" an item (same as clipping) as well as marking it in Google reader it downloads the article onto your iPhone and keeps it there until you "un-star" it.

Has a "Mark as unread" option

Has the option to only download headers if you're away from wi-fi to save data, then if you read an article it will download it then.

Downloads and saves your Google Reader "Notes" onto the device too.

Overall I'm much happier with Byline than NNW, and I used to really like NNW.

They've updated again, and now it's even worse. Can't get read items to go away now, whether or not I have it set to never keep them. Yesterday it said I had 95 unread items on one feed, I went to it, yet it didn't show any unread items, and when I closed it, the 95 went away. I finally got fed up with it and bought Web Feeds.
