Network Disk Renaming?

Is it possible to rename mounted network disks in OS X?

Mounted drives like "MY DOCUMENTS" are just about the ugliest title I can think of...

I've heard 'no' from a few people, but I figured if anyone would know... the folks here would.

The only thing I've uncovered is a Terminal command as follows:
disktool -n disk newname

But I can't seem to get that to work for the network disk...

The name given is the name of the network share. If you want to change "MY DOCUMENTS" to something else, you have to do it from the computer where the files actually are. In Windows, there is a share name you can set to do this. In any case, the share will be wholly capitalized. That's just the way network volumes mount in OS X.

I would recommend against changing the name. I could never get things to work correctly after that.

It's a shared Windows folder, but when I go into Properties>Sharing, I'm not able to change the share name.

That's the only way I think it might work, and with that I still have to deal with the CAPS.

It's a nuisance... but I'll probably get over it.

You have to recreate the share with the new name (the "new share" button at the bottom). It doesn't fix the caps thing, but it is helpful if you have lots of computers on your network and you don't want them all to show up as "C."

Maybe the next Finder rewrite will do away with the forced all caps, but it's just inherited from Samba (the *nix sharing utility for SMB, which Windows uses).
