Network Speed Tester for macOS

We've released a new app for both macOS and iOS to do proper speed measurements within your wired or wifi network. Speed data is visualized in a chart, so that you can move around your house and see the speed go up or down.

You can use the app to:
  • Verify your network components (swiches, router) to find bottlenecks in your wired network
  • Optimize the placement of your wifi router, try different locations until you get the best network performance
  • Measure impact of wifi range extenders
  • Find the best spot for watching streaming movies in your home

You can do speed tests between a mac and an iOS device, or between to macs. Ideally, one mac is connected directly to the router via a cable.

Sweet! Have been looking for an affordable app that tests the local network speed. Speed test only gives an approximation since you're going outside your network. Now I can compare speed tests' 239 Mbps to the 366 Mbit/s the app shows using my Time Capsule AC. And the fact that it gives you a continuous graph means you can walk around the house to find the locations with best wifi results, although could do by signal strength.

Now all we need is an Apple TV version.

I was hoping like the no longer updated app Speedynet that this app would also work between two iOS devices.

Since you are charging for the Mac app, but not the iOS app, you could put the iOS to iOS feature behind an in app purchase for those who would like that functionality.

We already thought about that - but testing with two devices on the same wifi network will probably give poor results. That's why we dropped it for now. But your right, it could still make sense for some. The AppleTV could also act as a server, especially when connected via cable. Maybe we can create a dedicated server app for iOS/tvOS.
 
Update for Apple TV 4 / tvOS

The client for Network Speed Tester is now also available on the tvOS platform! Just go to purchased in the store app and install the client. The Apple TV appears to have only Fast Ethernet built-in, so don't expect high speed measurements on it!

Now also available: Network Speed Tester Server for iOS devices!

We've released a new app that allows measuring between iOS devices, without requiring a Mac. The new server will work with the existing free clients on iOS and tvOS, and also the Mac version of Network Speed Tester. Updates of all apps have been posted for optimal compatibility.

The app for the Mac can be used standalone (not very accurate) or with a second Mac. The iOS version always requires 2 devices, one running the server and one running the client. Or they can also connect to the Mac server. There are even Client and Server Apps for the AppleTV. All apps work with one another.
