Networked PC/Mac Mini "Access denied"

Ever since I went to Windows 7 from XP, I have been unable to access Mac Mini (running Mountain Lion) from PC. I give up for months at a time, then try again. This time I got as far as being able to see my shared files on Mac but when I try to open them and enter requested user name and password, I get "Access denied" message. I have tried suggestion found elsewhere to log in as Guest with no password and that doesn't work either though it seems to work for other people.

Under 'Sharing' on Mac I have enabled 'Read and write' for all users, including 'Everyone' and my PC, which is listed there as user. The only one I haven't enabled 'Read and write' for is 'Public'.

My workaround is to use Teamviewer, a free utility that allows me full access to my Mac including running apps and transferring files, but does so on a reduced screen that is uncomfortable to look at. So an additional question is, how come Teamviewer can get to my Mac files but I can't?

Try this "workaround" :

1. On Mac, under sharing, select the folder you want to share, under "Users" click the "+" button to add a new user ("new contact", create the user and password) "cybercrone" for instance.

2. Then from the PC try to access the shared folder as "cybercrone" (use the password you've just created in step 1).

I was so hopeful about this solution because I know you've been around quite a while, Bruno - but it didn't work. I keep thinking I must have done something, screwed up a setting somewhere, that causes this, because I don't see other people complaining of the same problem (altho I find other gripes about access, I don't see this exact one). But I have gone through everything I can find related to sharing on the Mac and just can't see anything that looks wrong.

Did you check the "Options" window in System Preferences / Sharing ?

You must have "share via SMB" and the "cybercrone" account checked.

Do you have the same Workgroup name on both the PC and the Mac (this should not be necessary for the sharing to work, though).

Yes, yes, and yes. In the meantime, I think I have recognized where the problem is - my log-in, requested when I try to open a shared folder on Mac Mini on my PC. I'll be back tomorrow when I figure out if this is ackshully a PC problem or a Mac problem - not clear to me at this point.

It's Windows problem, not Mac

I have been able to determine that my problem is with Windows 7 network setup, not Mac Mini, so although I haven't been able to solve it, further discussion here is not appropriate.

However, the responses I got here have nevertheless been quite useful because you helped me learn much more about Mac Mountain Lion. So I am still better off than I was before. I thank you.

I got on! I got on!

I used a user name and password I had tried more than once before and got "Access denied". But today it works. Seems to me to be some kind of SMB foul-up but I don't know for sure.

That sounds as if your network is having Kerberos timing problems.

To mitigate this problem in a mixed network use the same time server in both of your computers & router.
