Hi there,

I am in a bit of a pickle. I have an iMac, Mac book pro and Mac mini. I also have a WD my cloud EX4 which has all my files stored on it.

I am a graphic designer and go from computer to computer all the time. What I would like setup is the iMac and Mac book pro to have everything the same on both from when I go from computer to computer. The MacBook Pro gets taken off location so I will still need to be able to access the files when I am not on the network. It would be great if the fonts, documents, downloads and desktop are the same on both.

I could use the Mac mini to setup Mac mini server if I need too. It's currently not being used.

Does anyone have any idea of what would be the best setup for me to get this going?

I look forward to your reply. Thank you.

Hope this helps...

How much of the stuff (in GB) you need on the MBP? Do you change a lot of file often or you need only some files to work with but typically change a few of them while on the move?

My file sizes are small so I use Google drive to have a copy and sync them across the big machines and on the MBA, I either use the cloud or copy them locally and put it back on the Google cloud.

It may or may not work if your files are massive and you change a lot of stuff. But if you have decent connection then you can still copy them locally on MBP and upload to google drive at the end of the change.

I use Google drive but one can use dropbox or skydrive or maybe the new iCloud with cheaper storage options. I also like the option of having the files on Google drive so occasionally I can refer to something on my phone apart from a backup.

Hi mate, my partner and I are both PhD students and have much the same needs as yourself. here is how i've set it up for us...

Mac mini is a server (fast uplink internet connection) and all devices can VPN into the server and have access to all files (some on USB external drives.

on the laptops i've installed chronosync and on the mini i have the chronosync agent. the app syncs all files that i want to the mini every 15 min (you can define the frequency)

the sync folders are available on all computers as shares. in other words my wife's files are located on her laptop but synced to mini and from there hosted to other OsX/iOS devices as shares. same goes for my files.

you can setup chronosyn to sync over WAN if you open up the necessary port (user defined ) on your router so you can sync your laptop from outside your home, though that isn't really necessary since it will sync everything when you get back home anyways.

chronosync is a bit expensive, but i've tried others and none are as good!

let me know if you have questions..

Good luck,
M,
