Networking mac to pc and through the internet

I have a mac g4 1.25 and a pc laptop(only because it was cheaper) -i know i'm a traitor and a bum, but if anyone can tell me how i can access my mac with my laptop through th internet, i could use the knowledge.

I have a wireless router and access through the local network is possible, but can i do it from other computers that are online? Like gotomypc kinda? I always work away from the mac and I need to get files from it when I am away? Can it be done?

Turn on ftp on the mac and then use an ftp program on the pc. Works fine.

i got to turn on the ftp to file share, but what do I do for the firewall settings to protect me from hackers?
