Hi. A quick network question:

I have a wireless network setup to connect my two macs to the internet. Now I am after a new mac mini and want to connect the mini to the internet with the wireless, easy. But what I also want to do is use connect the mini to my desktop mac so i can use it as a storage for my films and music. Will I be able to connect them together via an ethernet cable and still have them connected to the internet via my router?

Thanks

you will be able to access the desktop mac over wireless, no need for the ethernet cable. Just enable Personal File Sharing on the desktop mac (system preferences > Sharing). It works great. Then just go into finder, then Network, and fine the name of your desktop. Enter the user name and password, and you can access the entire HD of the other mac.

yes you can connect them across the ethernet. they have to different ip address, I run a back end network between my powerbook and imac. I not using ethernet but firewire, it 400 Mbit instead of 10/100, I don't have my gigabit yet.

Thanks,

The reason why I dont want to run wireless is due to low transfer rates, both my desktop and the new mac mini have gigabit ethernet so I wont get any frames dropping out as I do with wirless.

You should look for a small (4 port) Gig. switch. Then you can have all 3 Mac's sharing stuff. I have a Linksys 8 port Gig switch- it's very nice to be able to move very large files around (or perform backups), without a huge bottleneck.

I agree that would be nice, but...

One of my computers is a lap top so I enjoy the wireless and the possible route from mac mini to powermac is well hidden so I could easily run the cable.

Sorry for being a pain in the back-side!

no problem, I like to buy for the future (when I bought the 8 port, I only had 3 computers, now I have 8+).
Just run a cable between the two systems, give them IP Addresses (like 10.10.100.1, and 10.10.100.2) and enable sharing, and look in the finder- you should see the other computer..

I assume you are running 802.11b then?

Unfortunately yeah! I used to have a 802.11g but the router packed in! Even with that I got some frame drops on the network.
