Okay, so my friend purchased a powermac G4. It had tons of software on it. However, it has no software disks. I believe he has buggered it up good and has lost everything. He has OS 9 running now. He is attempting to transfer files from his OS 9 iMac to his OS 9 G4 using a Cat ethernet cable. It doesn't say it is a crossover cable. He is having problems creating a network. Any suggestions. He may even be still using Mac OS 10.3 under classic. He is a newbie to the whole Mac OS X thing. However, lets just say he is running OS 9 on both machines.

I have good news and bad news. The good news first. The cable made the difference, and it worked. He can now exchange files. The bad news, now that he has the files. He no longer has the Mac OS 10 software he wanted to use to create DVDs. So he basically purchased a sawtooth with Mac OS 9 and a DVD burner. Can mac OS 9 burn DVD's without iDVD? I am trying to persuade him to sell the sawtooth and get a Mac mini with a superdrive. Don't you think that would be worth it? Instead of trying to update his sawtooth in order to get good DVD burning. In my opinion he will need to upgrade the Processor to at least 733 Mhz, buy 10.4, and buy iLife. That alone should justify the purchase of a new Mac Mini. What do you think?

OS 9 can burn DVDs with the right third-party software, but not with iDVD. A Sawtooth is a poor choice for what he wants to do, especially considering he does not have OS X, iLife, or a fast processor. A mac mini would be much better than the Sawtooth.
The friend might also consider buying the software they want to use but don't have the CD's for...
