The wife wants an iPad for general email and web surfing from the couch at night for R&R time.
I told her that maybe it would be wise to wait on the next generation. I never buy the first generation of anything.
Anyway, since I have never followed this part of the forum I was wondering when the next gen is due and what changes may be on the horizon?

I wouldn't wait, what's the point? The current Ipad works well for what your wife wants and if you always wait for the next one then you will never buy one at all.

All of the real issues of the current iPad can and most likely will be adressed with software updates, so there is no reason to wait for the second generation if you want such a gadget now. There won't be a refresh this year, and I wouldn't expect miracles from next year's upgrade either - Apple is still building a niche for the iPad and there are limits to how much they can change before they piss off their existing userbase with incompatible new software. Don't expect much more than a camera and maybe a card reader in the next iPad.

I think I will be going for a next gen iPad, the current one is good, but the next gen will be around at around the time that I have the money for one.

It will be suitable for my needs, as both mine and your wifes needs will be fufilled fine by the current iPad, but the newer one will likely be a little more stable.

I applaud you for your first statement: Buy it when in makes financial sense for you.

What do you mean that Gen 2 will be more stable. My iPad is more stable than my iPhone, as stable as my macs with OS10.6.x and far more stale than any PC I've used.

I certainly don't fell like a beta user with the iPad.

Why are you asking about them now if you can't afford one for eight months? Eight months is a lifetime in computer technology :p
