Hello,

I am a very new user to apple -- I just bought my first macbook about one month ago. Recently I just came across an annoying problem: I notice that my hard disk would not stop. It is always spinning, no matter if I am doing something or am leaving the computer completely idle. My right hand clearly feels the vibration of the hard disk when typing, and by sitting still I can hear the hard disk working with the sound like the fan -- though the fan is not activated for sure. Could anyone tell me if he also meets with this kind of problem ever? Is it a problem of the harddisk, or of the logic board? (cannot be of any software, because I just clean installed the system and no software is running ) I am asking about the logic board because at the same time I did a Hardware test using the apple cd1, obtained an error report as 4SNS/1/40000000:TBOT. Could anyone help? Thanks a lot in advance!

Bienvenu, tonfisk....

I don't know anything about the error code -- that could be a problem. But first, I would check the "Energy Saver" settings to make sure that the disk can go to sleep:

:apple: --> System Preferences --> Energy Saver --> Sleep tab

At the bottom of the pane, you should see the following option:

[_] Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible

If that box isn't checked, then I would try that first.

Salut:)

Merci idea_hamster ...

Yes I have checked that, and indeed the "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" is checked, and the hard disk keeps working hard day and night. I think I might take out the hard disk and push it back again to see if that works ... But thank you for your advice!

Hmmm...It does sound like a deeper problem, especially with that error message.

The good news is that it is only 1 month old. So you should have no problem calling Apple or going into an Apple store for some advice. Hopefully it's not a send-it-in type of problem....

Bonne chance!

Thank you! Actually I have sent the macbook to the local authorized dealer, who did not really manage to help. They believe that their test does not show any trouble with this machine, and they would not say the hard disk has a problem, either. I think I will have to call apple support again on Monday to sort it out. I will keep it updated!

Bon weekend!
