Would the new 11.6" Airs use the
Intel Core i3-2357M 1.33Ghz CPU/GPU @17W
as Samsung decided for the 11" Series 9?

If so would be interesting to see how it is received by users
vs the current max 1.6Ghz 10W CPU being used...

Are their any other low power SB choices?

Guess we will find out soon don't want to give up silence for speed...

I would say the i3 2357M is highly unlikely to be chosen. Looking at its specs, it doesn't handle AES instructions (for hardware accelerated disk encryption) and doesn't even have Turbo Boost.

If they used that i3 then virtually no one would want the newer model.

i5 & i7 help sway the disadvantage of having the HD3000 for those who intend to use the machine in a Windows partition.

I think most consumers would pick "Core i3" over "Core 2 Duo", regardless if it's really better or not.
Everything else being equal, between a Sandy Bridge i3 ~1.3 GHz with no Turbo Boost + IGP vs C2D ~1.4 GHz + nVidia 320M, I'd go with the older model. The average Joe, though, would certainly pick the shiny new i3.

I'm surprised Samsung picked those i3's,
maybe heat was be an issue with the i7 mobile?

Putting a 17W CPU/GPU in one place
vs a physically separated 10W CPU and GPU might make a difference
in how often the fan needs to ramp up.

A current model 11 Ultimate for $999 sounds very tempting, will decide soon...

there have been a several posts on the cpus that might be used, search the articles and the forums.

But there are 17watt i7's with 1.7 to 1.8 Ghz.

Yes there have been lots of discussions but then we didn't know that the i3 was also available (at the time the lowest-end one was the i2537M core i5 1.4Ghz).

I also really really hope Apple is not going for the i3 and it was the first thing I thought of when I heard of its existence through the Samsung Series 9 news.

I'd really need Turbo Boost and AES-NI (filevault is a must-have on a portable for me, and to have it accelerated is super great with the relatively slow ULV cpus).

However I think there is only one ULV i3, so even if Apple does go for that one for the low-end model, there is a good chance the $100 upgrade CPU will be the i5 2537m. It will also force more users to upgrade the CPU so I wouldn't put it past them.

I'm still hoping for an i5-base, i7-upgraded option however!

choosing between the 13" and 11" and all these options, and getting one on release is going to be........taxing :D

Negative.

The IGP in the i3 would be just awful.

No one would take such a graphics hit for a little bit of cpu performance.

The average consumer would see i3 and probably think "wow its newer tech than the c2d, I should get that one instead of the c2d model" and not realize that although it is newer it is not necessarily better. I know my parents would mostlikly do that at least...anyways i cant see them going with the i3, I would put my money on i5s and i7s for the 11" and hopefully i7's for the 13"
