I received the iPad 12.9" 1TB last Friday and noticed the power button is wonky. It rattles and rocks as you slide your finger over it. Not a huge deal but does trip the OCD a little. I chatted with Apple support and they scheduled a genius appointment for them to review the physical complaint on the device.

Is this something to be concerned about or am I overreacting? I wasn't sure if this could potentially escalate into a bigger issue down the road. My other devices don't experience this kind of behavior.

Thoughts?

Tell you what, for every device, after being used quite a bit, those buttons will eventually exhibit the same wobbling “problem”, and somewhat fast I might argue, though many of those buttons don’t rattle enough to become noticeable.

Gotcha. Like I mentioned, it isn't a deal breaker. And of course I fear an exchange could exhibit a different issue.

So what I am gathering is, get over the initial wobbly, it will eventually become a common issue anyway. Correct?

I’ve my had my 12.9” iPad since day 1 and the power button is rock solid. I’ve had it in an Otterbox case so I don’t know if that makes a difference. I do know the tap to wake features makes it so I don’t use the power button often, so my use case could be wildly different from yours as well.

Certainly couldn’t hurt to have a tech take a look.

Understood. And you brought up a good point. The power button isn't used as much, unless I need to manually turn the screen off or reboot. I'm using the Apple Folio. Got an open-box deal from Best Buy.

Yeah, at least based on my personal experience of using a few iPad Pro and one very old iPad mini.

Best case scenario you will forget about the rattle eventually.

The power button on my 2021 12.9" 1tb cellular iPad Pro doesn’t have any play, and I’ve never experienced that on any of my other devices throughout the years. With as much as we payed for this model, I would definitely not be happy and demand a replacement. Apple does not care about us. Don’t let them talk you into repairing it. Get a new one.

If it comes down to it, worst case is I can return this and exchange/purchase a new one. The luxury of only owning it for a week does give me the advantage. I will go to the Apple store with an open mind to explain and listen to my options. No need to be dramatic with this issue at all. More of an annoyance and tickles the OCD in me.

I would check the Apple Store for the display iPads to see if it does the same thing based on your perception.

Update: Went to my scheduled Genius appointment and the tech confirmed that some of the display units exhibited the same behavior. I asked if he could show me the units and he did. At this point I believe it’s working as designed and don’t want to take the risk of getting a different issue if I do an exchange.
