My dog knocked over a cup of coffee onto my 17" macbook pro. I need to replace it by the end of the year. I DO need the 17inch screen for my work. Apple has released a new 15 inch but no 17 inch. What are the chances of seeing one in the near future?

so is it worth waiting for?

what are the improvements in the new laptop? Is it a big improvement?

what programs do you use?

also dont forget about snow leopard.

And we all hope the 17" will be updated at macworld 2009 but no one truly knows. I think a lot of people were puzzled when apple didn't update the 17" in the first place in oct.

I'd say January's Show. Definitely worth the wait as long as you don't need a new laptop in a rush!

When is the January show? and how soon afterwards are they usually available?

I am a pro photographer using photoshop. so performance is paramount.

I have the early 17" macbook pro - but that really doesn't matter since it is no longer usable.

I so most of my processing on my 8core macpro, but need the laptop for travel and teaching. I will need one by 1/16 - (although I could possible borrow or rent one if I needed to.) What are my chances?

also...I've noticed that recently Apple hasn't been waiting for shows to make releases...so is it possible we will have one before then?

macworld is in early January. i highly doubt it will be out before then- maybe not even then but i hope.

and really as far as the computer goes it's only a guess but i would be VERY surprised if it was anything more than a bigger version of the 15 inch, with a high res screen and an extra USB port.

They are usually available the day of the announcement, but not always.

Anyhow, I would definitely look into getting your dog to share half the cost. It's only the right thing to do.

lol- the thing is she is so darn sweet I couldn't even be mad at her.

She is a pound pup I have only had for about a month - and she is really a good dog. She was just trying to come up on the sofa and sit next to me - which she is allowed to do. The problem is she took a short cut across my lap and knocked over the coffee in the process.

I guess the question I am asking, is that are the new improvements they came out with in the 15" worth waiting for the 17" version of the same...or should I just go ahead and get the current 17"? There will most likely be a good sale on Black Friday.

Yeah, I love doggies!!! :)

I wouldn't get caught up in always having the very latest. Look at the specs the 17" has and the deal you can get. if they are both optimal and a good deal, get it and take advantage of the sales. Judge it on its own merits solely.

well...the thing is that any laptop is slow to me because I am used to my 8core...so if the new ones are faster, it would be worth the wait and a few extra dollars.

I'm not a techno-geek - but I am impatient with slow computers and lack of space for my big 21 mg files from my 1DSmklll.

Load up an Intel SSD into a unibody MBP and it'll beat the MP.... Of course my statement is based on the statistics from xbench.

showing my ignorance here (I am just a lowly photographer that knows little about computers - I just use them)

...but what is an Intel SSD?

Those who know cannot tell, and those who tell cannot know.

I would have gotten a 17" mbp had it been available when they lunch the 15" mbp. I guess, I'll just wait for a few years for my next mac. It will probably be 18", judging from the look of things.

Solid State Drive. It's like a hard disk drive that uses flash memory instead of platters. The good ones are MUCH faster than HDDs and use a fraction of the power.

I would personally buy the 15-inch model. I mean does the 17-inch display give you THAT much more room? I know how you need a big display for editing photos, but even 17 inches is kinda small for doing that. If you can buy an external monitor to use (if you aren't doing all of this on the go), that's a great option.

In real world situations a Macbook Pro 17" will not come close to a Mac Pro, SSD or not.

Especially not if the Mac Pro is souped up. You're comparing a dual-core processor with two server-grade quad-core processors, a potential for, what is it, six GPUs? Not to mention a cap on RAM of 32 gigabytes if I'm correct. Also, couldn't one stick a SSD in the Mac Pro as a primary boot drive too?

It IS for on the go stuff only. I have been planning on bringing a second external monitor for when I teach....so I guess the 15 inch in an option. I hadn't really considered that before.

I guess I'll have to make the trek to the Apple Store before next week to check one out. I sure wish we had one closer than 2 hours away.

When is the January show?
January 5~9, 2009 with the keynote on the 6th, I believe.

Hard to say right now, but if there's none at Macworld, then the chance is basically 0%.

The 17" high-res display (now it's by default) has 78% higher resolution than the 15" display. The usable resolution increases even more.

Also it is notable that the last update did not increase CPU GHz's any significant amount (one model dropped by .4 GHz). So given that and Intel's releasing speed bumped CPUs in Q1 2009 tells me we may see a slightly faster than 2.53 GHz 17" MacBook Pro (2.67 GHz?). I don't expect quad-core, since they are too hot for the MacBook Pro.

Yeah the Mac Pro would kill the MacBook Pro, but who would compare a workstation to a On the go quick editor? Yes you can use SSD in the Mac pro for the Primary HD and Im not sure about the 6 graphics If I'm correct some cards take 2 PCI slots?
