Hi there,

I just got a new 17" SR MBP today. It is fantastic. The screen quality is incredible... the high resolution is amazing. I'm very happy with it.

Thus far, I have only come across two problems. The first is that the LCD seems to be pinched very slightly in the bottom left corner, distorting the picture such that the corner is slightly darker than the rest of the screen. It is very slight, and very small. My question is, will it get worse, or will it stay the same for the life span of this MBP?

Second, my FW400 port appears to be very loose. When I first plugged in a device to the port, it didn't seem to connect at all. After about the fourth try, my external harddrive finally showed up in Mac OS. Now the port seems to be working, but it still feels kinda shoddy when I plug something in. Should I just count my blessings and be happy with my MBP, or is this the type of problem that could end up with me having a nonfunctional FW400 port?

Thanks all!

(btw, this machine really is great.)

Go ahead and complain.
You should be getting a flawless machine for the money you have to pay for a 17'' Hi-Res MBP.

Here's an update:

My MBP now exhibits a few more problems...
Hissy headphone jack: I can hear many noises, including slight blips, prominent hiss, and the occasional whirr through my headphone port.
Slow expose & dashboard performance when unplugged: When running on battery, the dashboard and expose are visibly choppy.
Dark band at bottom of screen: A thin horizontal band, about an eighth of an inch.

I would take it back and demand to get a replacement. You paid top dollar for a machine that should not exhibity any of the issues you describe. Why should you accept anything else than a completely defect-free computer? Apple doesn't advertise: "There exists considerable variation in quality among individual units. Some have dark strips at the bottom of their displays; others have them on the side. Some customers may get a perfect display, while others will get one that is imperfect for the same price. Also, customers should be aware that audio sometimes is messed up and there can be hisses and clicking when listening to music"

Go get what you paid for! You're doing Apple a favour in the long run and you're definitely doing yourself and other customers/apple-lovers a favour by not accepting inferior quality.

Good luck

Take it back. It definitely seems like a stinker, no reason for you to live with it since you payed a LOT for it.

Hey my MBP as well as many others have that Dashboard problem. Exchanging the computer will likely not fix the problem.

Well, I called AppleCare... they pretty much can't (or won't) do anything other than tell me to take it back to the nearest Apple Retail store (which is a 7 hour drive) where they may (or may not) exchange it for a new laptop.

I would ask to talk to customer service. It is completely unacceptable that a new machine has a faulty display and hiss from the audio jack. You just need to talk to somebody up the ladder and explain the situatio and the fact that you'd have to drive for hours to get to the store.

If I were you and felt really annoyed about the issues, I'd return it and demand a refund because it's defective. And, if they tried to charge you a restocking fee, I'd dispute the fee with my credit card company. On the other hand, if you're generally happy....just keep it and enjoy.
