I just received a 1st gen Iphone. I am also not an ATT user as of now. I have a Verison plan that is expired so i am open to any options. I am really looking for some assistance in what is my best route of action to activating my phone for service? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Go with ATT, if they are the provider in your area. If T-Mobile has better coverage, then go with them, it really depends on which carrier is better in your area.

I would imagine that ATT will be the best in my area. Plus i get a discount through work. My question is, do i just sign up and get a standard phone, or do i tell theim i am planning on using a iphone?

I have not received the phone yet, so i am unable to answer the firmware question.

If you want the data services, and want to sync it to iTunes (you have to) then ATT needs to know it's an iPhone. If you're going with ATT and you have an iPhone why would you not want to take full advantage of it's capabilities?

I guess the better question would be, do i but a 3g phone or take the 1st gen phone?

Yes, the 1st gen is free. Is there any capability of getting the 1st gen software upgraded to support faster processes?

No, it's going to be slower, and that is the only difference, unless you really want true GPS. But a free 1st gen iPhone is better than a 200 dollar 3G. As for the activation, just plug it into iTunes and it will take you through the steps to establish either a new account through ATT or transfer your old number to the iPhone.
