New 2.33 17" MBP crashes

Hello all,

I just purchased a 17" MacBook Pro and I've been somewhat saddened by the somewhat frequent app crashes I've been experiencing. It's mostly two apps and hey seem to be triggering the other to crash. The two apps are Firefox 2.0.0.3 and Dreamweaver 8. I know that DW8 isn't a universal app and is likely the culprit but I'd like some feedback from you all. When I have them both open at the same time one or the other usually crashes. However, if I quit firefox and then start DW again it seems to work fine.

Any ideas? This is a fresh install of OSX so I don't believe it has much to do with my system environment.

Confused...

So, if I'm reading it right, Dreamweaver is crashing, not the system? Your post title seems to make it sound like the computer itself is crashing, but your description sounds like its only two applications that crash, one of which is not native to the computer. Am I getting this right?

Right, it's not the system that's crashing, it's DW8 and Firefox that are crashing and DW8 isn't yet intel-native.

I unfortunately have no "help" for you, but I use both DW8 and Firefox.
I haven't had any problems with either of them...this probably doesn't help much except to show that it's something just with your computer. (no offense )

This does help, thanks! I have upgraded my memory by replacing one of the 1Gb chips with a 2Gb chip. However, it's a Samsung chip and appears to be working just fine. Other than that the system is completely stock.

Well, first off, Firefox 2 has never been reliable for me either, and I'm not even running DW8 along side of it like you are. Firefox was always crashing at random times, even if it was the only app running. So, Firefox may be a separate issue. I ended up switching to Camino instead. Not really a fix, but at least its another option.

As for DW8, my initial reaction to the problem would be that it is a "old" PPC app running on your "new" Intel laptop. I have problems with Photoshop CS2 crashing occasionally and I usually chalk it up to it being PPC.

Yea, I definitely agree that Firefox 2 is buggy...it's crashed a bit on me.
I have had 1 problem with DW8 and Contribute, etc...it would NOT start up at all. Not really a crash but just wouldn't start, the little icon would sit there and bounce and then stop. I archived and installed OSX again and everything worked. (I may also have reinstalled the apps.)

If the newly installed RAM was bad or incorrectly seated, the computer would either not boot, or you would see system wide anomalies, like crashes, freezes, booting issues, etc.

My guess is that the problem lies with the software on the computer. Since it is a fresh install, its not likely the operating system. That narrows it down to applications, which the OP has narrowed down to DW8 and Firefox. Therein lies the rub.

Try removing .plist files for each of the apps and then restart them. This would be one of my first steps after finding the culprit apps.

Thank you for putting that into words for me I couldn't think of quite how to say it...
