New 20" iMac - Very Slow Wireless N Adapter

:confused: I wonder if it's just me??

I have a brand new 20" iMac - running Windows XP through Boot Camp. It's wonderful! Great Computer!

However, I have a LinkSys N Wireless Router upstairs and my iMac is downstairs. I can't get better than a "Low" Connection using the on board Broadband Wireless N adapter that comes with the iMac. Other computers in the same area achieve an "Excellent" or "Very Good" connection. The iMac goes in and out of it's connection with the internet. It's a bit frustrating loosing connection all the time.

Any Ideas. (I Hope!)

The Driver is Broadcom v 4.100.15.5

It sounds like one of two things has happened.

First Your antenna for your wireless card has either become de-attached partially from the airport extreme or the antenna wire connected to the inside chassis has come loose.

Second Your airport extreme wireless card has gone bad and it needs to be replaced.

I would recommend getting Apple to look at it especially if its a new iMac that is still under warranty.

For some reason, when I first got my iMac the internet was EXTREMELY slow for a few hours. No idea why.

My mom had the same experience.
 
Yeah, a few hours after I initially booted and it was blazing fast. Not sure why both of ours had this problem.

Spotlight has to index the drive ... which uses up a lot of drive access time, slowing the machine to a crawl for awhile.

If you reindex the drive, it'll happen again.

Ok that makes sense but would that honestly affect the wireless?

That is true . . . I would say let the run for about what 8 ~ 9 hours and see if it speeds up at all. I am not convinced that is the cause but it might be.

iMAC and linsys N wireless

I am having the same problem. When I first got my new iMAC it was a lightning fast connection. Now a month later it is too slow to be functional--it keeps intermittently losing its connection. Meanwhile the connection works just fine with the PC's in the house. Is there any history of a specific problem of Linsys N wireless routers with the new iMAC???
 
After posting up above that mine sped up, it's now slowed down again. I've had the iMac for about 2 weeks. When I hit "Home", which is Google, the loading bar goes to halfway and just sits there not moving, and then after about 5 seconds the page pops up. I KNOW it doesn't take that long to load Google over G internet with the router 5 feet away. Anyone figure anything out?

i highly doubt that, iMacs have a drive read speed of around 80Mbps, reading and saving a web page will ahrdly impact on that.

mine performs pefectly. maybe the problem is something different.

1)have you tried doing it at different times of the day? the internet can become very bogged down during peak-hours..
2)are you sure there is nothing else hogging resources, e.g. other computers on the network arent stealing bandwidth.
3) are you capped :p

all that i can think of at 1AM...

1) It's all throughout the day, and it's weird. It has worked fine in the (short) past.
2) It's the only computer on the network
3) No cap.

ok there goes all of those.
what about interference?? is it possible that you or your neighbours have a 5.4ghz or 2.4ghz phone that is interfearing? what about a wireless logitech (or similar) mouse. i know that those mice have caused many problems with wireless.
 
sometimes i find this with mine, i normally reboot the router am connected to. or there is an area fault with the ISP and everything is running slow.
it could be a number of things really. unless its a faulty iMac. I got a new 20" Alu about 4 weeks ago and i never had problem with it being slow. not as slow as your describing anyway
try resetting your wireless modem.

I'm capped. Its LAME!!!!! Seriously after 4gb of download am down to 1mb download speed. from 12mb. Arrrghhhh

4gb isn't enough bandwidth a day when its shared between a family worth of laptops and my little brother is seriously obsessed with runescape.
 
I had the same problem. My 20" aluminum iMac has possibly the worst wireless ever!
I even used an Airport Express to boost the signal to 75% or so, but the speed was soooo slow. My HP laptop running XP right next to it was speedy. I think its just the iMac that has issues with the wireless.
I had to spend $150 to fish an ethernet from my basement and hardwired my iMac.
I am not sure sorry but it seems like a commin problem amongst the iMacs.

4gb a day, are you ****ing for real?!?!?!?!?!?!?

i get 25gb a month!!! i pay $100AUD.

when i get capped i go back to 64kb.

so stop thinking you have it hard, because you dont! 4gb a day is amazing..
