Hello — Finally received my 2018 MBP 15” i9/32gb/1tb and it has been ok (not great, will explain) so far.

Last night the screen went off as if it were going to sleep and I cannot get the screen to come back on. Keyboard and Touch Bar do not light up when pressing anything and since this is the first MBP I’ve had without a power button, I’m not sure what else to try. It makes the charging noise when plugged in, so something is working.

There have also been strange audio glitches happening since I got it where it was stutter and crackle when playing any audio, wether it is system sounds, streamed audio, or local audio files. Killing coreaudio was the only way to fix it, but it ends up happening again and I have to redo the process. I read somewhere that this is because of heavy background processes of new system and all the things syncing and indexing in the background (logic additional content, Photos syncing, google drive). So I was hoping by today (day 2 of having the device) it would be resolved.

Any suggestions?

How do you do this with the new machines. I’m slightly embarrassed to ask, as I’ve had macs since 2010 and was able to fix stuff myself usually.

Isn't Touch ID the power button?
If it is, it’s not resetting the machine (I thought the same thing).

Hold down the touchID button for at least 5 seconds. This will force power-down your MBP.

You will be able to tell the MBP is powered off because the trackpad won’t “click” when you push on it.

Power it back up while holding down Command+Option+P+R. There is no power on chime so Try to make the room as dark as possible and watch for the LED backlight. It will turn off, then come back on. Let it do this 3 times before releasing the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys.

What happens?

Thank you for your suggestions! I'm saving this in case this happens again but I got it back on.

Holding down the TouchID button didn't do anything for some reason. I quickly googled and found a video explaining that if you hold down the power button (TouchID in my case), center of the track pad, and the space bar it will reset. I don't know if this is the actual solution but that's what I did and got it working. Is that really the proper key command? It didn't sound right but whatever buttons it recognized made it work, computer running fine now.

Is it common to have to reset the PRAM on a brand new device? Yeesh. I love the look and feel of my new MacBook but I'm going to return it if stuff keeps going wrong. I've somehow been one of those customers that never had any of the big issues everyone talks about with all their apple devices, so this would be a first for me.

I got it working! Not sure what the issue was. I do want to point out that I was using an Anker USB-C to USB-C power cord, so that might have somehow ****ed it up. Switched to the Apple provided one before trying the key combo to get it back on. Too many variables to figure out what was the problem or solution.

I honestly don't know what kind of cat I have! It was just a long-hair black cat. She has a little brown tinting and her belly has long ash colored hair too. She's cute and devious. Thanks!

keep the original chord, these are fickle machines, im glad that works tho

probably a turkish angora cat, mine is furry as fluff, hates laps, beds, thinking, groups but loves outside in tall grass, conversations, being exactly in the middle of the room. I had her almost a year, when she was a month old.
i have pic of her on flickr and started a group of these felines.

If this, or any other issue, returns, then I would go for a replacement, and assuming you went for space grey you are in luck because the i9/32GB/1TB model is stocked at Apple Stores, and so if you could get to one, you could get an on-the-spot replacement. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/uk-stock-for-15s.2127921/page-2#post-26268355

Believe it or not, the trackpad on the 2018 MacBook Pro is never off (unless the battery is completely dead): https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-2018-macbook-pros-force-touch-trackpad-is-never-off.2127541

Whoa! The crackling, speaker issue that person/those people had are not at all like mine. It was pretty obvious that my issue was a software one, because even after I would turn off whatever the audio source was, the speakers would continue to play glitchy sounded audio for another half second and resetting the coreaudio would fix it.

Thanks for the reference links! I'm going to keep an eye on it over the next week before I jump in the car and return it.

Not sure if they're in stock here in Seattle, but if they are, that would make the whole process much easier. Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it over the next week and see if the issues resolve.
