New 21.5" versus 27" iMac

I have read all the specs for both the latest iMacs and I am still undecided. The 21.5 iMac has a 5400 RPM hard drive and the 27" has a 7200 RPM. The 27" is really too large but I like the faster hard drive. Do you think there would be a much more performance difference with the 21.5 iMac 5400 RPM versus versus the 27" iMac? I don't need fusion on either of them. Like I said I really don't need the larger screen but I don't want to sacrifice performance either by getting the 21.5" one. The price difference doesn't concern me as much as performance. I have a mid 20" iMac now which has a 7200 RPM drive, and I feel by getting the smaller iMac with the 5400 HD it would feel like I am downgrading and shorting myself. What do you guys and gals think? I am torn between the two.

The Fusion drive is a 128GB SSD plus a 1TB or 3TB HDD. Having a SSD is one of the best upgrades you can make to any computer.

As for the differences between the other components, I think the one most people will notice or not notice would be the video card. Ask yourself what you use the computer for and if its there is anything that would benefit having a fast video card (ex: Gaming, 3D or Compute tasks).

Anyway the $250 Fusion upgrade is not that much considering how much Apple charges for things. So If your buying a new Mac do yourself a favor and get one with a SSD (in this case a Fusion drive). You won't regret it.

And to answer your question; stay away from the 5400RPM ONLY iMac, it's a stupid storage choice on such a nice computer.

That's why I went with the i7 mac mini over the iMac. Swapped out the HD with a sweet SSD, upgraded the RAM, and now it's running great.

sorry my bad. it seems like the main problem here is the hard drive' rpm.

if the hard drive in the 21.5 was 7200 rpm. you would made ur decision already correct?

just get the previous generation imac. save a bit of money, and u get upgrade it to a 7200 rpm hard drive. it is not that much slower.

It makes me wonder though why apple wouldn't include the 7200 RPM in the 21.5" model also. It could be because there is not enough room in the 21.5. Like on my 2007 20" iMac it has a 7200 RPM hard drive. Go figure....

yea it's not the space. all desktop hard drives are the physical size. i didn't even know people make 5400 rpm 3.5" hard drive. my 6 years old dell desktop has 7200 rmp 3.5" hard drive.

No, the current 21.5" uses a 2.5" HDD. There are currently no 1TB 7,200RPM 2.5" drives.

Like others, I would recommend using the price difference between the two sizes to add a Fusion Drive to the 21.5" iMac.
