New 24" iMac - 4 hours use, views so far

Well what can i say, firstly why oh why did i wait so long so change over to mac???? The iMac is a thing of beauty, it works so seamlessly, flows with elegance and does everything with ease.

I love the design and size (24") and as a package it works very very well. I just can't believe how easy things are, for instance after 4 hours i thought how did i ever do without this option or that bit of software/setting etc...

The mighty mouse works very well, the only issue i have is the keyboard i keep hitting the comma button when typing but reckon i will soon learn to slow down lol

So enough of the bigging it up post, quick question do i need to register the iMac for warrany purposes or did it do that at the setup stage (it sent something to Apple). Also would you reccomend Applecare or is house insurance better lol.

Any other wonderful tips, found a few by searching already, like using unison for Nzb etc..

One thing i do love is the 'bounce' option in Mail......... that could be very useful lol
 
...You chose wisely :) I'm glad you're enjoying it, the iMac is a brilliant machine and Mac OSX is cool, as you know.

Be wary of your mighty mouse, keep your hands clean and take care of the little 'nipple' on the top as it soon gets grubby and stops working if you're not careful.

I love the keyboard, I think the problem is that is so easy to type on it that your fingers go to fast for you to keep control at first. When you go back to a normal keyboard you'll find it very clunky.

I would recommend getting AppleCare. You don't need to buy it through Apple, you can get it on eBay or a through a 3rd party seller like Amazon. Enjoy!
 
Congrats. I got the same Mac ablout a week ago. Did you get a new or a refurb. If it is a refurb check the scecs on your HD you may be in for a very happy surprise (i know i was when i say the 500gb HD instead of the 320gb)
 
How is the brightness of your screen?

I have a 24" maxed out iMac which hurts my eyes. It is strange that I do not see much of a difference whether the brightness is on minimum or maximum.

Do you have the same issue or is there some thing wrong on my machine?

I use my Alu 24" iMac with brightness on the lowest setting...i have calibrated my display for that brightness. :)

My 24" is extremely bright on the minimu setting. I use Shades to fix that:

Welcome to the Mac community. You are in for a great treat these next few weeks and months and you rediscover all the things computers are supposed to be able to do.
 
I loved, and still do, my iMac but hated the mouse; then I found out you can right click the silly thing... system prefs... I just need to stop buying Macs at some point. I should form a support group. :cool:

Tell me about it, I've bought three Macs in the last 7 months. My last was a Blackbook and now I'm thinking of buying a white MacBook just to have one of those as well.


I'll be the head of MacBuyers anonymous if you wish. :D
 
Cheers guys, got it new and yes i love it and the old cliche "i don't know how i ever did without it" lol.

Re: brightness, yes i find it bright but left it "as is" for now, it doesn't hurt my eyes but will probably lower the setting once i settle in to the mac experience lol...

Anyway now to work out how to stream movies to my ps3...... anyone got any ideas ??

I also decided to not at this point load windows, going to try and forget windows and move forward with Os X. Only issue is i use to play battlefield 2 on it so MAY have to load windows just for games.....


Any comments on windows for games (is setting windows up on mac easy?, what do i need?, suppose windows disc would be good lol) Also any comments on ps3 movie sharing??
 
eyeconnect by elgato works well, too. Nullriver has been doing the mac to console streaming thing since about 2006 I think, their products are very nice

As for the warranty thing, yes it registered it when you did the little wizard at the beginning.

Installing windows on your mac is simple, open up the bootcamp utility in Applications/Utilities folder, follow the steps there, reboot and start the windows install process. Let it finish, and then put in Disc 1 that came with your iMac, that has all the drivers on it.

Your iMac should be now ready for gaming. I am able to play COD4 quite well on it, I would compare it to my roommate's PS3 quite easily.
 
Welcome to the fold. I switched last Monday with the entry-level iMac and I'm completely in love with it and OS X. My only regret is I didn't ditch Windows a while back :p

I had a real Leopard v XP moment at the weekend. My sisters very old PC (Athlon 1.1, 256MB, 40GB!) was sluggish as hell and needed some stuff cleaning off it. Odd processes, spyware, adware and some pretty nasty Trojan's left, right and centre. CCleaner alone cleared just under a Gig of muck off the HDD :eek:

Managed to get it running slightly better but coming back home to my iMac just sat there shining in it's glossy, widescreen, minimalist glory was a great pleasure :apple:

I hope you enjoy your Mac as much as I've been enjoying mine :)
 
Extreme Brightness Levels!!!

I am still not able to take the fact that I have to install a third party software (Shades in my case) to be able to use my iMac without burning my eyes :mad:

I have been using my new iMac for a week now and comparing it to my glossy hi-res 17" MBP and my MBA, it is really wonderful in terms of real-estate, but it is burning my eyes like hell, due to extreme brightness levels, and there is no Shades equivalent in Vista so playing games is almost a no-no in this machine!

How come reducing the brightness to minimum on both laptops turns off the screen while doing so on the iMac almost does nothing :confused:

I use it for my PS3 streaming and the only prolem I;ve had is with files not supported by the PS3.

The best thing I can say about MediaLink is that it's exactly the same as Macs. 'It Just Works' ;)

You get used to it. I had hard time looking at the iMac screen during the first week.. but then your eyes adjust. Now, I don't even think about it.
 
i ended up going down the lines of eyeconnect, this just worked straight out of the 'download' so to speak. It has played everything i throw at it so far.....
